Deamonte Driver died on February 25th 2007 from complications resulting from an abscessed tooth. It would have cost $80 to extract the tooth. Instead, the bacteria spread to his brain, leading to a hospital stay that cost $250,000. Deamonte did not live to see his 13th birthday.

The Health Policy Research Consortium is an NIMHD-funded Transdisciplinary Collaborative Center (TCC) whose mission is to use innovation and research to transform public policy - with the end goal of reducing health disparities in the Mid-Atlantic area and beyond.  Health Policy and Research Analysis
HPRC believes in public policy that helps people make the healthiest
choices. In order to do this, we examine the effectiveness of current policy and explore the need to modify, strengthen, or abandon these policies, in order to empower communities and improve health outcomes. One recent example is that we investigated the role housing policy plays in shaping health outcomes.

 Health, Human and Municipal ServicesThese three services combined create a strong social safety net through local, state and federal policies. Some common health, human and municipal services offered in Prince George's County include waste management, maternal and child health services such as the Women in Crisis (WIC) program and certain statues of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). HPRC is currently conducting a gap analysis of services in Maryland. The report will be released in the Spring of 2015.

 Community Outreach and Engagement
HPRC has designed and will implement a Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) project that bridges the gap between disadvantaged communities and policy makers. Mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) research approach will be employed during the implementation, data collection, analysis and evaluation of the project. Participants will be empowered to catalog their material and non-material assets using the Photovoice application.
