Kids Read Now: The Chronicle
A Board of Directors' work is never done... But we're pleased to announce that our Board has stepped up to make Kids Read Now operate just a little more efficiently.

To better align with our physical program schedule, the Board of Directors for Kids Read Now has voted to change our organization's fiscal year. Effective at the close of September, the new fiscal year for Kids Read Now will be October 1 - September 30 rather than the calendar year. Administratively this shift will help our team better match resources to our school partners when they need it most - immediately before, during, and after delivery of our program to their students. Our school partners and families won't notice a change, and they will continue to receive the excellent services they have come to know and love.

Donors likely won't notice a change either, but they do have a unique opportunity to make a second tax-deductible donation this calendar year and impact two years worth of Kids Read Now programming. Your donation after October 1 will impact our summer 2015 students, but you will still have the opportunity to claim the deduction on your 2014 tax returns. To take advantage of this great opportunity, donate here or mail your donation to our office at 726 Grant Street, Troy, OH 45373. And, as always, thank you for partnering with us to eliminate the summer reading slide!

Christmas in July Means Extra Books
Merry Christmas! Wait... Too early? Not for us!

Kids Read Now volunteers teamed up with staff members this week to pack and mail a bonus book to each of the 4,000 students enrolled in our program this summer. A "Christmas in July" mailing, we hope to keep kids excited about reading all summer long.

Thanks to the fabulous students and adults who volunteered their time and energy to make this project a success, and we hope each of our students enjoys this extra special gift!

From Cheryl Poeppelman:
"Raegan from Concord Elementary School of Troy City Schools loves getting new books from Kids Read Now. She runs to the mailbox looking for her package! Thanks Kids Read Now!"

From April Wyatt:
"Thanks Kids Read Now from Nathan and Charlie!"

Nathan and Charlie also stopped by our office. After Charlie saw our stacks of books, he said, "This is my favorite place in the whole building!"
Thank You Donors!
Thank you to fantastic funders like The Duke Foundation, The Frank M. Tait Foundation, Walmart #1410 (Troy, OH), and Vandalia Optimist Club for their recent donations to Kids Read Now. These gifts, totaling more than $21,700, will ensure 381 students receive books through our program this summer. We will eliminate the summer reading slide, and it's because of partnerships with organizations like these that we will do it.

Just $57 is all it takes to put books directly into the hands of a child all summer long through Kids Read Now. Not only is your gift tax-deductible, we also recognize our donors online and in print materials. No gift is too large or too small.. All gifts make an impact, and we appreciate your support.
So Call Me Maybe?
With 4,000 students from five school districts enrolled in Kids Read Now this summer, we're making a lot of phone calls! We're thrilled to see more than one quarter of our students reporting they have finished reading a book each week. Keep up the good work, kids!
Purr-fecting Reading Skills
Our pilot project with the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, Book Buddies, is getting rave reviews!

Available exclusively to Kids Read Now students, Book Buddies allows children to read to shelter pets at the Dayton facility. Not only does this extra practice help students improve their reading skills, but it also socializes the animals and makes them more adoptable. Kids benefit because dogs and cats don't mind if words are mispronounced, and this helps to build kids' confidence as they learn to read aloud.

Don't miss out on your chance to sign up for a Book Buddies shift this summer. Click here to reserve your space. If Book Buddies isn't in your community yet, let us know if you would like to see it reach your town for summer 2015.
Fifty Years of Advocacy
An educator herself, Kids Read Now co-founder Barbara Lurie understands firsthand the devastating effects of the summer reading slide on how children learn.

But did you know that her husband and fellow co-founder, Leib, also has a passion for improving education that began when he was just a small child?

Leib's mother, Ellen Lurie, ran a neighborhood action program that served as a foundation model for the Head Start program now serving 3 million kids annually. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Ellen Lurie's testimony before Congress, and her passion for education continues to drive both Leib and Barbara to help kids break the cycle of poverty in their own lives by getting a great education.
