The Right Foods for
You in 2014
Important Foods to Eat for Your Overall Health AND Chiropractic Health
There has never been more awareness in regards to food health and how the foods you consume affect your body. Unfortunately, our culture is more susceptible to eating foods that are detrimental to our health, such as processed foods and "fast foods". And what is even more unfortunate is that these foods are the most easily accessible and inexpensive which makes them more enticing for our population!

There are numerous articles out there that provide research on the healthiest foods available, and some of these include:

  • Water - Surprisingly, Americans do not drink enough water. According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 43%of adults drink less than four cups of water a day. That includes 36% who drink one to three cups, and 7% who drink none. Water is the best fuel for your body, and is essential for every system in the body. Check out this article to find out more on the studyTo drink the right amount of water for your body, think about how much you weigh and divide that number in half. That's how many ounces of water you should drink per day.
  • Fish - Research suggests that eating oily fish once or twice a week may increase your lifespan and can deliver healthy doses of omega-3 from the fish oil in each serving. Omega-3 fatty acid is known to reduce inflammation that can cause or increase joint pain. It is always better to purchase fish that is wild and not farmed. Studies have shown that as much as 70 to 80% of the fish marked "wild" are actually farmed. For example, all salmon labeled "Atlantic Salmon" currently comes from fish farms. Look for Alaskan salmon or sockeye salmon to know that they really come form the wild.
  • Dairy Products - Dairy products attribute to bone health and muscle building. Whey protein is the superior protein for muscle building because it's absorbed quickly and causes a large and fast spike in blood amino-acid levels, which is exactly what you want when your body is looking to repair and build muscle fibers after exercise. Ricotta cheese is a great source for whey protein.
  • Green Plants & Vegetables - Green leafy vegetables tend to be very rich in antioxidants and consuming them can significantly lower a person's risk of developing diabetes type 2. Broccoli, particularly, contains more than 100% of your daily vitamin K requirement and almost 200% of your recommended daily dose of vitamin C -- two essential bone-building nutrients. Also, microwaving broccoli actually preserves the Vitamin C up to 90% because nutrients break down when they're exposed to heat, whether it is from a microwave or a regular oven, and with the microwave cooking times are shorter.

Foods You Thought
Bad Are Now Good
"Bad Foods" that are Actually Good
As more research is done, people are finding out that some of the foods they thought were unhealthy are actually beneficial and necessary for balanced health. Take a look at some of these foods:

  • Grass-fed Butter - Since the 20's heart disease became an epidemic, and certain foods came to blame especially butter. What people don't realize is that we've been eating butter for thousands of years, since long before heart disease became a problem. In fact, real butter that comes from grass-fed cows is one of the most important foods you can eat for a healthy heart. Grass-fed butter is loaded with vitamin-K2, the missing nutrient that de-calcifies your arteries. Other nutrients include healthful fats, glycospingolipids, trace minerals, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and wulzen factor, a hormone-like substance that prevents arthritis and joint stiffness, ensuring that calcium in your body is put into your bones rather than your joints and other tissues.
  • Bacon - New research shows that foods packed with niacin - Vitamin B3 - are linked to a longer life, which is a nutrient found in bacon. Niacin actually fools the body into thinking that it's performing physical exercise. The protein found in bacon is extremely valuable to maintaining our energy levels and it actually has less total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol than many popular cuts of beef and chicken.
  • Organic Coconut Oil - Coconut Oil has been mistakenly labeled as unhealthy due to its high saturated fat content. However, modern science has now retracted these earlier claims and instead, is praising the health benefits with some even stating it as the "healthiest oil on earth." It is is rich in vitamins and minerals and especially rich (60%+) in important fatty acids, and has no detrimental side effects. Unlike other vegetable oils, it does not form harmful by-products such as trans fats, when heated to normal, medium or even high cooking temperatures
