BLS Tennessee Economy at a Glance

Take a look at the recently released May 2016 Tennessee Economy at a Glance table. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides monthly labor force data and nonfarm wage and salary employment data in an easily digestible format.

The State Data Center Program is a national cooperative program with the U.S. Census Bureau. Data Centers in each state assist the Bureau by disseminating Census data and other federal data sets and information.

 

Each Data Center has an internal statewide affiliate network to further assist in disseminating data to local users. These affiliates also have local information and expertise to offer.

2015 Population Characteristics 

The U.S. Census Bureau's 2015 population estimates released on June 23 included age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin at the national, state, and county levels. 

Baby boomers in 2015 (ages 51-69) made up the largest portion of the Tennessee population at 23.9%, as seen below. Millennials in 2015 (ages 18-34) followed closely behind at 22.7% and generation X (ages 35-50) at 20.6%. The nation, however, showed millennials with the highest share of the population at 23.4%. Baby boomers were just behind at 23.3% and generation X at 20.5%. 


Other 2015 Tennessee highlights include:
  • Median age: 38.6
  • Oldest counties (those with the highest median ages):
    • Cumberland (50.5)
    • Pickett (49.1)
    • Loudon (47.4)
    • Clay (47.2)
    • Jackson (46.7)
  • Youngest counties (those with the lowest median ages):
    • Montgomery (30.5)
    • Rutherford (33.4)
    • Davidson (34.4)
    • Shelby (35.2)
    • Putnam (36.5)
  • Male population: 3,217,461; female: 3,382,838
  • Racial categories, alone or in combination with one or more other races:
    • White: 5,308,260
    • Black or African-American: 1,192,750
    • American Indian and Alaska Native: 69,939
    • Asian: 144,530
    • Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander: 11,262

The Fourth of July is Upon Us

The Census Bureau released the following fun facts in light of the upcoming holiday. 
  • The U.S. population has grown from 2.5 million in July of 1776 (when the Declaration of Independence was signed) to 321.4 million as of July 2015.
  • Fireworks sales by retailers in 2012 valued $368.6 million
  • Fireworks and firecrackers sales by wholesalers in 2012 valued $482.6 million
  • In 2015, the U.S. imported $4.4 million worth of American flags and exported $3.1 million.
