2015 CBER Population Projections Show Growth Across Tennessee

Thursday, August 27, the Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) released annual Tennessee population projections by county, sex, age, and race from 2011 to 2064.

Projections indicate that Tennessee is likely to follow the national trends in which metropolitan counties are seeing the fastest growth, the population continues to age, and the state is becoming more racially diverse and urbanized.

Tennessee's population is expected to have a 1.0 percent compound annual growth rate from 2010-2040. There are 20 counties that are expected to grow faster than the state rate, 8 of which are in the Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin Metropolitan Statistical Area.

New Residential Sales on the Rise Across the Nation

According to the U.S. Census Bureau's New Residential Sales, new houses sold in July 2015 grew 25.8 percent compared to July 2014. The south experienced a slightly higher growth rate of 28.9 percent and accounted for approximately 66,000 houses (63 percent) of the nation's increase in new houses sold compared to 2014.

July 2015 numbers indicate 294,000 new houses were sold in the south, 5.8 percent higher than in June 2015. New houses sold across the nation (507,000 houses) in July were 5.4 percent higher than June.

While the country is experiencing an increase in new houses sold, the July pre-recession peak in 2005 (1,389,000 houses sold) implies there is room to grow.

August 2015 New Residential Sales will be released on Thursday, September 24.
