Addison County in ACTION
Foster Parents Urgently Needed
The more qualified foster families there are in every community, the easier it is to keep children in their own communities and schools. Having children stay connected to family, friends, and other supportive individuals provides them with critical stability during times of uncertainty and turmoil. And research shows that educational outcomes for children in foster care are better the fewer times they change schools. To learn more about foster and respite care, go to http://dcf.vermont.gov/fsd/kids/fostercare/.

First Annual Addison Wellness Awareness Day a Success!
Fair Season is Here!
The fairs are an important opportunity to make a difference on behalf of Vermont's youngest children and their families. Before we can make lasting change, we need to raise public awareness in our communities and educate Vermonters on how critical the early years are. The fairs are one of the best opportunities to mobilize the people power of this movement by getting people involved.
Will you commit to signing up for a three hour shift at our table? By volunteering with us for just three hours at a fair in your area, you can help grow this movement rampantly. The more we connect with community members, the more quickly we can educate Vermonters about why the early years are so critical. We'll also provide you with a free pass to the fair for when you volunteer as well as an extra set of fair passes for you and your family! If you don't already have one, we'll also provide you with a free Let's Grow Kids tee shirt.
The Addison County Fair and Field Days takes place from Tuesday, August 4th to Saturday, August 8th. We need volunteers for all days, all shifts! Shifts are from 10-1, -1-4, and 4-7. Please email Shayla MacDowell at shayla@letsgrowkids.org to learn more, or learn about other fairs outside of Addison County. Or, if you already know you want to volunteer, you can sign up right here.
S. Whitney Landon Award for MJCC
Mary Johnson Children's Center, and its Rural Fun Delivery project, was the recipient of the major grant award of the Turrell Fund -- the Annual S. Whitney Landon Award, presented at the 2015 Turrell Fund Day for Children, held in Burlington on June 4, 2015. The RFD project delivers food and enrichment activities to rural Addison County communities.
The award is given to non-profit, 501 (c)3 agencies that are directly serving children from birth through third grade and their families, with priority consideration given to early childhood programs serving the youngest and highest risk children. Three unrestricted grants were awarded -- Mary Johnson's for $25, 000 and two for $2500 each. The S. Whitney Landon Awards are designated by the Turrell Fund to recognize and applaud early childhood programs and organizations in Vermont who are engaged in exemplary practices, including innovative approaches for promoting child and family well-being which ideally can be widely replicated. The award was gratefully accepted by Center co-directors Barbara Saunders and Ilana Snyder, and School Age Programs Coordinator Anne Gleason.
Addison County Wellness Awareness Day
The first annual Wellness Awareness Day was held on June 27, 2015, hosted by Burlington Labs. The day was filled with ample organizational representatives featuring wellness awareness and educational displays and informational tables on nutrition, education, substance abuse, and prevention. Live music, a dunking booth, bicycle-powered smoothie making and free food made for a well-attended and lively event!
