Greetings!

May continues the preparation for a successful implementation of Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge project. Building Bright Futures will play a central role, statewide and locally, in this 4-year project.

Welcome new Director, Mary Smit! Mary hails from the Hartford Region and serves as representative of the Parent Child Center Network.

This year's legislative session ended with passage of important legislation for young children & families. Please see HB270 which passed in early May. When you see our own Senator Kevin Mullin, Senator David Zuckerman, and Representative Bill Frank, please thank them for their role in the passage of this important legislation.

If you havent seen the report yet, find the How Are Vermont's Young Children? Report on www.buildingbrightfutures.org. Happily, this report has been highlighted in multiple media outlets, radio, print and tv.

Please see HB559 which passed in late April. We can thank Representative Bill Frank for this bill's passage. Thanks to the passage of this bill into state statute, we now welcome Breena Holmes as Dr. Harry Chen's Designee for the Department of Health, Charlie Biss as the Designee for the Department of Mental Health, and Reeva Murphy who is able to serve and vote in the absence of Commissioner Dave Yacovone.

The Early Childhood Budget report continues to be honed into a final product. Reminder that this report is the first phase of a 2-phased
Finance Plan, for a sustainable, comprehensive System of Early Care, Health, and Education.

I am also excited to announce the hiring of Deb McLaughlin as Regions Manager. Deb is an existing Regional Council Coordinator with the Southeast Vermont Regional Council and comes to this job with a strong skill set; from funding development, strategic planning, to years' long experience convening widely diverse stakeholders.

Please welcome Deb to this new role and join her as we build a stronger statewide network with partnering regional councils.

Regional Council Coordinator candidates are being interviewed throughout the state this month and already, BBF has hired a Data Coordinator, Data Analyst, and Finance Manager. Next to be hired, Communications Coordinator and regional Council Coordinators.

Watch next month for next steps planned toward Action Plan implementation!

Sincerely
Julie Coffey, M.S.
