Faculty Feature: Amber McGown, Third Grade Teacher

What is your education?

I graduated from Gonzaga University with a Bachelors Degree in Special Education.  Additionally, I hold endorsements in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education from Gonzaga.

How many years have you been at SMA?

This is my second year teaching 3rd grade at SMA.

What is your working/teaching experience beyond SMA?

Before receiving the position to teach at SMA, I was a substitute teacher for several schools including a long-term sub position at a preschool.  I also completed my student teaching practicum in the 5th grade at SMA. This summer, I will be teaching with the Challenge Foundation.

What would you name as a memorable classroom/curriculum experience you have experienced?

One of the most valued classroom experiences I have had is collaborating with different grade levels to share what we have learned.  Last year during the Loretto celebration, we learned so much about our Loretto history that the kids were ecstatic to share what they knew with older and younger grades.  We shared books we wrote about the history of St. Mary's Academy, and it was rewarding to see the learning in action.

What is something about yourself to share with the SMA community that we might not already know?

My family used to have a cabin in Glacier National Park where I would spend some of my summer.  It is one of my favorite places!

News:

  • Tenth grader Mary Eleanor Tezak was one of 100 students in the state of Colorado selected to meet U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.  Sotomayor visited Denver last week for the dedication of the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Building, the new court building at 14th and Broadway in Denver. Students had the opportunity to ask questions as well as listen to Sotomayor tell the story of her life. Sotomayor  encouraged them to "take chances."  She continued,  "The hardest thing to do is to take chances where you can fail, because most of us like the security of doing things we think we can do.  Take a course that you don't think you can do. Try a new activity after school because it looks like fun and you might as well try it now ... when you get to college you may not have the time."
