Noted Author Kelley King to Visit SMA Community

We are pleased to announce that St. Mary's Academy has set in motion a working relationship with author and educational consultant Kelley King.

Ms. King is a Master Trainer with the Gurian Institute and her recently published book is Writing the Playbook: A Practitioner's Guide to Creating a Boy-Friendly School. While Ms. King's primary work focused on closing the gender gap in test scores at her elementary school in Boulder Valley, her research has grown to encompass brain research in supporting successful school experiences for boys and girls. She is the mother of a son and a daughter, allowing for her research to include her personal experience.

Ms. King is a nationally recognized expert on how boys learn, and she believes that "responding to the learning styles of boys will help a school become more effective in meeting the needs of all students - including the girls."

Faculty Feature: Sharon Gayley
Cross Divisional Music/Band

What is your education?

I have a Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.) degree from the University of Northern Colorado.

How many years have you been at SMA?

I am completing my 9th year at SMA. I currently teach general music to kindergarten and third grade, some fourth and fifth grade music, two levels of LS and MS band, MS handbells and some limited music presentations for the HS World Religion class. I am also the faculty sponsor for the HS Tri-M Music Honor Society. As a cross-divisional music teacher, I enjoy the variety I have all day in my job. I also have the opportunity of teaching our students more than once, so I get to watch them grow up over the years!

What is your working/teaching experience beyond SMA?

I taught Elementary and Middle School band and orchestra in the Aurora Public Schools for 11 years followed by 15 years working as a Medical Assistant. For 24 years, I have been a part-time instructor and low brass specialist, teaching after school, with Colorado Honor Band Association.

I started playing baritone horn in the fourth grade and later the trombone and tuba. I have also been an active musician in the Denver area performing in Brass-Beat Jazz Band, The Brico Symphony, The Denver Concert Band, the Denver Municipal Band and Jazz Band, the Aurora Symphony, St. Paul Lutheran church handbell choir and currently singing in the Colorado Symphony Chorus.

I am a member of the Music Educators National Conference, Delta Omicron International Music Sorority and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association.

What would you name as a memorable classroom/curriculum experience you have experienced?

It is difficult to name just one as there have been so many! I love the look on students' faces when they have finished performing and they know that all their work was worth it.  Music is a wonderful means for students, at all levels, to develop self-confidence and to work together for a common goal while learning and having fun along the way!

What is something about yourself to share with the SMA community that we might not already know?

I am a Trekkie! I have enjoyed all forms of Star Trek (TV, movies, books) since I was a kid. I have even dressed up and attended Star Trek conventions in the past! "Live Long and Prosper!"
