How many years have you been at SMA?

I have been here for 13 and a half years.

What is your working/teaching experience beyond SMA?

For three years I taught at King Elementary School in Colorado Springs; for 10 years, I taught at Preston Hollow Presbyterian School in Dallas; and for seven years I taught for the Challenge Summer Program here at SMA.

What would you name as a memorable classroom/curriculum experience you have experienced?

I have created a Geo-Designs curriculum for a Fine Arts Elective. It's a popular elective with students.  I enjoy watching the students immerse themselves into a project. I am always impressed with their geometric/artistic results.

I enjoy gardening and watching baseball.

  • Middle school principal Martha Ashley presented at the TedXDenverTeachers event last month.  She shared the lessons learned from the eighth grade trip to the Cochiti Pueblo. Mrs. Ashley was one of only 12 presenters selected from independent schools, Denver Public Schools and charter schools. Presentations focused on teaching and learning in the 21st century. Mrs. Ashley shared the powerful life lessons learned when the students began to "listen" to the Pueblo leaders who came to meet with the students. Click here to watch her presentation.

High School News & Events

News:

  • The Junior class participated in its first ever Innovation Day in March.  The event was inspired by Google's corporate philosophy which states that in order to foster creativity, employees should spend 20% of their time at work learning independently about any topic of their choosing.  Ms. Vroomunn brought that philosophy back from a Google conference to implement at SMA, and we were all dazzled by the results.  Juniors chose topics that ran the gamut from the Chemistry of Cake-Baking to Creating a Rube Goldberg Machine; from Women's Rights in China to Nutrition of School Lunches.  Students spent the morning independently researching topics and then presented their final products to eager peers, teachers and parents in the afternoon.  Whether girls learned how to jump a dead battery in a car or how to run circuits through fruits and vegetables, they made SMA's First Junior Innovation Day a wild success!
  • Tri-M Music Honor Society raised money at a recent bake sale to donate to the Colorado Public Radio's Annual Instrument Drive, which donated instruments to low income schools in Colorado to provide opportunities for students to play an instrument in band and orchestra.  Also, Tri-M has a ongoing Cans at Concerts project, where everyone is encouraged to bring  a can of food to SMA concerts to be donated to a local food bank.  Next concert is May 13!
