SOMERSET HILLS YMCA PROGRAMS

Kids Night Out - Somerset Hills YMCA Kids Night Out event, which is happening on Friday 10/11 from 6-10pm, is a fun night for kids to play at the Y while their parents have a night off.

Saturdays in Motion Fundraiser -  The Y is holding its 5^th annual swim fundraiser for Saturdays in Motion, a recreational program for children with autism and their families. The Saturdays in Motion program is free and open to the community. The fundraiser will be held Sun, Oct 13.

Recycled Art Contest- Aspiring artists from Pre-K through 12^th Grade are invited to participate in the Recycled Art Contest. The contest is free and open to the community. Entries are due November 1^st. 

Dance Bowl Game - Dancers in the community are invited to be part of the half-time show at the Russell Athletic Bowl Game and the Macy's Parade at Universal Studios, both in Orlando, Florida.

Girl Scout Badge Opportunities- The Y offers a series of workshops to assist Scouts in mastering the important skills required to earn a badge.

NEW -BERNARDSVILLE RECREATION PROGRAMS

Traveling Basketball League--

Traveling basketball teams for Bernardsville boys in grades 4^th, 5^th, 6th, 7th and 8^th, and Bernardsville girls in grade 7th.  The teams will play in a very competitive traveling league with practices once or twice per week, and games Friday nights or Saturdays according to league schedule. See attached flyer for tryout times and more information.  

Wrestling (with the Raritan Valley Wrestling League) for all age groups --

Registratrion on Monday, November 4 at the Middle School Gym from 6:00-8:00 pm.   Coaches will be available to answer any questions.  Midget practices Tuesday and Thursday nights and Youth practices will be Monday and Wednesdays from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.   There will be no Novice wrestling K - 2^nd grades, instead they will be practicing with Midget wrestlers this year.  Questions can be directed to Bernardsville Recreation, 908-766-2546.   Volunteer coaches are also needed!    Coaches must be Rutgers certified.  See flyer for information.

Camelback Ski Trip - 2014 All Students in Grades 9 - 12

Bernardsville Recreation is sponsoring a 5 trip ski package to Camelback for high school students.    The trips will run Wednesdays immediately after school is out.  The dates of the trips are:  January 8, January 15,  January 29,       February 5,  February 12.  See flyer for all information.

FLU SHOTS

The Bernards Township Health Department has scheduled dates for seasonal flu shot clinics in October.  All clinics will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. and are open to those 4 years old and over. Flu shot clinics will be held on Friday, Oct. 18^th at the Peapack-Gladstone Municipal Building, 1 School St. in Peapack; and Saturday, Oct. 19^th at the Bernards Township Community Center, 289 S. NEW -SCHERMAN HOFFMAN WILDLIFE SANCTUARY PROGRAMS

Hike & Seek™ -- Sat, Oct. 19 --  12:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Hike & Seek™, a National Wildlife Federation fundraising event, is a cross between a nature hike and scavenger hunt, aimed at bringing family and friends together in the great outdoors for fresh air and fun! Held at the Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary, the 1.5-mile hiking adventure will allow for kids to connect with nature and interact with five adventurous Stop & Study locations on our trails. By trading screen time for green time, this go-at-your-own-pace event will surely create a lasting impression and promote a healthy lifestyle for kids of all ages!

Hands-on Hand-crafted Paper - Sun. Oct. 20  1:30 PM - 4:30 PM

In this workshop we will experiment with different plants added to recycled paper to create unique papers that can be used as cards, bookmarks, wall-hangings, and more. Learn which invasive plants can be used for paper-making.  We will even use certain bracket fungi to create hand-crafted paper. Bring some old sheeting and a stack of newspapers.

Students will make and donate pink rainbow loom bracelets to be sold for the cause! There will be a box in the BMS office and Bedwell lobby to drop off your donated bracelets for the sale. Your child will earn community service hours for making and or selling bracelets. Local retailers will be selling the bracelets for $3. You will be able to purchase bracelets at The Rebecca Collection, Salon Studio, and Penguin Ice Cream throughout the month of October. It's that time once again to add, "place Fresh Citrus order from Bernards High School Band" to our weekly shopping lists!  An autumn tradition for over 30 years returns to Bernardsville, and the kids in the band are as grateful as ever for the community's ongoing support of their healthy and delicious fundraiser!  Orders may be placed from now until November 7, 2013. Proceeds from the sale provide critical funds for the school's Marching, Jazz, Orchestra and Concert Bands.  Help the Band, help yourself -and don't forget, they make great gifts, too!

NEW - HOLIDAY FAIR AT ST. LUKE'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH.

Saturday, Nov 23, 9:00-3:00. The theme this year is "Winter Wonders".  The fair includes shopping and activities for the whole family: handcrafted ornaments, hand knit items, floral topiaries and wreathes, home baked goods, frozen gourmet foods, a children's boutique (which allows only youngsters to shop for family and friends at appropriate prices), photos with Santa, and more!  Lunch is sold from 11:30 until 1. Admission to the fair is free.  All proceeds from the Fair are used to fund mission programs such as the Community Soup Kitchen, Interfaith Hospitality Network, and Houses to Homes . The Bernards Township Health Department conducts a monthly no cost clinic for children who are not covered by health insurance which ensures that children receive appropriate vaccinations in a timely manner.  

The services provided are: Growth and development assessments, Immunizations for newborns through children 18 years of age, Nutrition assessment and counseling, and Information and education on childhood health, safety, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) in the area, Pediatric Dental Program, NJ Snap (Food Stamps), etc. This influenza vaccine is available to those who attend at our Child Health Conference.

Joel Zelnik Trio-Free Concert--Sunday, October 13 at 3:00 pm. "My Bill Evans - A Personal Conversation" is a fascinating program based on the dialogues between Joel Zelnik and Bill Evans, a seven- time Grammy Award winner, at the Village Gate during the mid-1960s.  Signature Evans works will be performed as the trio presents informative insight into this jazz great. Part of the "Sundays at Three" series, this concert is funded by the Friends of the Bernardsville Public Library.  Doors open at 2:45 pm.  No sign-up is needed.

BERNARDS TOWNSHIP HEALTH DEPARTMENT PROGRAM-PROSTATE CANCER

The Regional Chronic Disease Coalition of Somerset and Morris Counties in conjunction with Bernards Township Health Department and Morristown Medical Center will sponsor an educational program entitled "Prostate Cancer: To Screen or No To Screen? Clearing Up the Confusion" presented by Arthur Israel, M.D., F.A.C.S. from Garden State Urology and Keith A. Harmon, M.D., F.A.C.S. from Somerset Urological Associates on Tuesday, October 15^th. The program will be held at the Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church--45 Church Street in the Liberty Corner section of Bernards Township and will start with refreshments at 6:30 p.m. with the program following at 7:00 p.m.

This discussion will center around up-to-date information on the risk factors for, prevention of, screening for, and treatment of prostate cancer.
