NEW - MUSIC IN THE SOMERSET HILLS PRESENTS

The Storm King Symphony:  Multimedia Organ Concert

October 5, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

St. Bernards Church, Bernardsville

 

Join organist Christopher Jennings for a multi-media concert to delight the eyes and ears!  The program will highlight music of twentieth-century American Composers, and feature an organ transcription of the rarely-heard Storm King Symphony by Clarence Dickinson, with its musical depictions of nature reflected in a dynamic and colorful slideshow.  Works by Calvin Hampton, Alec Wyton and Gerre Hancock round out the program.

FLU SHOTS

The Bernards Township Health Department has scheduled four dates for seasonal flu shot clinics in October.  All clinics will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. and are open to those 4 years old and over. Flu shot clinics will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9th at St. James Church, 184 S. Finley Ave. in Basking Ridge; Thursday, Oct. 10th, at the Chester Field House, 107 Seminary Ave., Chester; Friday, Oct. 18th at the Peapack-Gladstone Municipal Building, 1 School St. in Peapack; and Saturday, Oct. 19th at the Bernards Township Community Center, 289 S. NEW - SOMERSET HILLS YMCA PROGRAMS

Kids Night Out - Somerset Hills YMCA Kids Night Out event, which is happening on Friday 10/11 from 6-10pm, is a fun night for kids to play at the Y while their parents have a night off.

 

Saturdays in Motion Fundraiser -  The Y is holding its 5th annual swim fundraiser for Saturdays in Motion, a recreational program for children with autism and their families. The Saturdays in Motion program is free and open to the community. The fundraiser will be held Sun, Oct 13.

 

Recycled Art Contest- Aspiring artists from Pre-K through 12th Grade are invited to participate in the Recycled Art Contest. The contest is free and open to the community. Entries are due November 1st. 

 

Dance Bowl Game - Dancers in the community are invited to be part of the half-time show at the Russell Athletic Bowl Game and the Macy's Parade at Universal Studios, both in Orlando, Florida.

 

Girl Scout Badge Opportunities- The Y offers a series of workshops to assist Scouts in mastering the important skills required to earn a badge.

Help support BMS Brigade, a group of service-oriented students from Bernardsville Middle School, as they raise funds for Morristown's Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center via Hunger Walk 2013.  Please consider joining them, rain or shine, on Sunday, October 20, at 1:00 P.M, for the 5K walk, which begins and ends at 36 South Street, Morristown.

Bernardsville Recreation is sponsoring traveling basketball teams for Bernardsville boys in grades 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th, and Bernardsville girls in grade 7th.  The teams will play in a very competitive traveling league with practices once or twice per week, and games Friday nights or Saturdays according to league schedule. CHILD HEALTH CONFERENCE

The Bernards Township Health Department conducts a monthly no cost clinic for children who are not covered by health insurance which ensures that children receive appropriate vaccinations in a timely manner.  

The services provided are: Growth and development assessments, Immunizations for newborns through children 18 years of age, Nutrition assessment and counseling, and Information and education on childhood health, safety, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) in the area, Pediatric Dental Program, NJ Snap (Food Stamps), etc. This influenza vaccine is available to those who attend at our Child Health Conference.

SOMERSET HILLS COMMUNITY CHORUS

This is an invitation to join with fellow singers for the Somerset Hills Community Chorus Fall concert, to be held on November 9.  Music in the Somerset Hills is thrilled to present a tribute concert to the great composer Benjamin Britten in honor of the 100th anniversary of his birth. The Somerset Hills Community Chorus will join forces with the ladies of the Antioch Chamber Ensemble, the MISH Summer Voices children's choir, Merynda Adams on harp and Brian Harlow on organ.  

 

The concert will take place on Saturday, November 9, 7pm at St. John on the Mountain in Bernardsville. Rehearsals begin on Monday September 16 from 7-9pm at St. Luke's Church in Gladstone. To help cover the costs of the concert, participants are asked to make a suggested donation to MISH (a tax-exempt organization), or purchase concert tickets to re-sell or give away. Participating in the Fall session will allow for a reduced rate for the Spring session. As always, students between the ages of 14-18 participate for free.

 

Rehearsals begin on Monday evening, September 16 from 7-9pm at St. Luke's Church in Gladstone and continue through Monday, November 4.  Our dress rehearsal will be during the day on November 9 and the concert is at 7pm.  [email protected]

Joel Zelnik Trio-Free Concert--Sunday, October 13 at 3:00 pm. "My Bill Evans - A Personal Conversation" is a fascinating program based on the dialogues between Joel Zelnik and Bill Evans, a seven- time Grammy Award winner, at the Village Gate during the mid-1960s.  Signature Evans works will be performed as the trio presents informative insight into this jazz great.  Part of the "Sundays at Three" series, this concert is funded by the Friends of the Bernardsville Public Library.  Doors open at 2:45 pm.  No sign-up is needed.

BERNARDS TOWNSHIP HEALTH DEPARTMENT PROGRAM-PROSTATE CANCER

The Regional Chronic Disease Coalition of Somerset and Morris Counties in conjunction with Bernards Township Health Department and Morristown Medical Center will sponsor an educational program entitled "Prostate Cancer: To Screen or No To Screen? Clearing Up the Confusion" presented by Arthur Israel, M.D., F.A.C.S. from Garden State Urology and Keith A. Harmon, M.D., F.A.C.S. from Somerset Urological Associates on Tuesday, October 15th. The program will be held at the Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church--45 Church Street in the Liberty Corner section of Bernards Township and will start with refreshments at 6:30 p.m. with the program following at 7:00 p.m.

 

This discussion will center around up-to-date information on the risk factors for, prevention of, screening for, and treatment of prostate cancer.

SOMERSET HILLS YMCA WORKSHOP

Training is being offered by the Somerset Hills YMCA, in partnership with the Adult School of the Chathams, called Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). Mental Health First Aid is the help offered to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Through the training, participants will learn how to recognize some of the signs of mental illnesses. As part of the Y's commitment to youth development and healthy living, we are proud to offer Youth MHFA for adults who interact with youth on a regular basis...at home, at work and in the community.
