New CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BHS TEAMS WHO COMPETED IN THE MOODY'S MEGA MATH CHALLENGE!!!
Two teams from BHS competed in this year's Moody's Mega Math Challenge. This is a 14-hour math competition in which students download a real-world situation and spend the next 14 hours researching the problem, formulating a solution, performing sophisticated mathematical and statistical analyses and documenting their results in a comprehensive paper. This year's topic dealt with the issue of plastic waste filling our nation's landfills, and challenged students to propose the best recycling methods for U.S. cities to implement based on their demographics, and to recommend guidelines for nationwide recycling standards.
Ph.D.-level applied mathematicians serve on panels for the competition's three rounds of judging. This year, both of the BHS teams made it into the 2nd round, a distinction earned by only the top 16% of all teams and a 1st for BHS! The students representing BHS in this Challenge are: Alexa Bream, Nermeen Chaudhry, Lauren Crane, Kathryn Cummings and Nikita Shaiva; Ethan Brady, Jonathan Gillespie, Emily Oliveira, Trevor Silva, and Navaneethan Vaikunthan. Click here and here to review the teams' entries. For more information, contact their advisor, Ms. LuAnn Falletta at falletta@shsd.org.
