SHEF College and Career Center

**NEW WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE FROM THE COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER**

A series of Workshops will be available by grade level to assist parents with planning for College. When possible, please adhere to dates assigned by grade, as the information will be tailored to that specific grade. The schedule of workshops is as follows:

For Parents of grade 9 students: All workshops will be held at 6:30pm in the Community Room

Next Week March 19th: Using Naviance: A guide to researching careers, majors and colleges.

April 16th: Planning for enrichment throughout the school year and over the summer.

For Parents of grade 10 students: All workshops will be held at 6:30pm in the Community Room

April 16th: Planning for enrichment throughout the school year and over the summer.

For Parents of grade 11 students: All workshops will be held at 6:30pm in the Community Room.

April 30th: Using Naviance to conduct a thorough search for colleges (make-up session).

May 29th: Understanding the College Application Components including a look at the Common Application.

Open to all grade levels: All workshops will be held at 6:30pm in the Community Room.

May 9th: How will I pay for college?

June 6th: Planning for College Testing

June 13th: College Planning Q and A. This will be an open agenda. Come with any questions you may have before we break for the summer.

Guidance

Deadline Today SCHEDULING: WAIVER FORMS

We strongly encourage students to carefully consider teacher recommendations if they are considering any changes in ability grouping [e.g. moving from an accelerated (A) level course this year to an honors (H) level course next year]. Any student who did not meet the grade requirements (see Grade Requirements below) for moving up to a higher ability grouping or continuing in his/her current grouping next year, must submit a Waiver Form to do so. Students who fill out a Waiver Form for an Advanced Placement course must speak to the current teacher of that course regarding the rigor and requirements of that course; there is a space on the form for the AP teacher to sign, indicating that the conversation has taken place.

If a student submits a Waiver Form, he/she will only be scheduled for the course if he/she has met prerequisites AND there is available space in the class.

Click here for a copy of the waiver. If students have any questions regarding Waiver Forms, they should speak with their guidance counselors. The deadline for Waiver Form submission is March 15, 2013.

Grade Requirements for taking an (A) level class without a waiver:
* Continuing in accelerated (A) level class: No grade requirement
* Moving up from "no letter" to Accelerated (A): B+ or better average for MP1, MP2 and Midterm Exam

Grade Requirements for taking an (H) level class without a waiver:
* Continuing in Honors (H): B- or better average for MP1, MP2, and Midterm Exam
* Moving up from Accelerated (A) to Honors (H): B+ or better average for MP1, MP2 and Midterm Exam

Grade Requirements for taking an AP level class without a waiver:
* Continuing in AP: B- or better average for MP1, MP2 and Midterm Exam
* Moving up from (H) to AP: B+ or better average for MP1, MP2 and Midterm Exam
* Moving up from (A) to AP: A or better average for MP1, MP2 and Midterm Exam

New ATTENTION PARENTS OF SENIORS

Caps & Gowns & Tassels will be ordered for your son/daughter within the next two weeks. Please make checks payable to the Class of 2013 for $25. Money is due to Ms. Cerza by March 28th!

The Senior Prom is Friday, June 7th. The prom will be held at the Madison Hotel. Details will be forthcoming in the month of April.

New STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Petitions are now available for any BHS Freshman, Sophomore or Junior who would like to run for Student Council office for the 2013-2014 school year. Click here to download the petition form.

New STUDENT COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP

Applications are now being accepted for the 2013 $1000.00 Student Council Scholarship. Seniors who have made significant contributions to the BHS community should apply. Click here to download the application. The application can also be found in guidance.

New JAZZ BAND AND WIND ENSEMBLE CRIMSON CAFE

The BHS Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble Crimson Café will celebrate New Orleans this year. The event will be take place in the Performing Arts Center at BHS at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013.

Music and Buffett Supper

Adults $40.00, Seniors $20.00, Students $10.00

New CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BHS HARVARD MODEL CONGRESS DELEGATION

Congratulations to the 24 students in the BHS Harvard Model Congress delegation for their impressive performances in Boston. Students played a variety of roles in the simulation including representatives in the House and Senate, National Security Council, Presidential Cabinet, the West Wing Program, and the National Economic Council. Special mention should go to those who were recognized by the HMC staff for their outstanding contributions to their committees. The recipients of these HMC awards included Pierce Henderson (House Financial Services Committee) and Chad Pisano (House Education and the Workforce Committee).

Winners! FENCING RAFFLE WINNER ANNOUNCED

The following are the winners from the BHS Fencing Raffle that was held Sunday evening 3/10 during the Awards Banquet at the Basking Ridge Country Club:

SIDE WALKS AND STUDENT SAFETY

It has been brought to the attention of the administration by concerned parents that students who are walking to/from the high school have not been utilizing the sidewalks. It is imperative that we encourage our students to be safe pedestrians and to stay out of the roadways. We appreciate your assistance in keeping our students safe and avoiding unnecessary tragedies. Thank you.

DOWNED TREES AND OPEN LUNCH

Attention all students: We have been alerted that there are trees uprooted by the storm that are dangerously hanging over the path from the high school to the Burger King parking lot. Until further notice, students are not permitted to use that path at any time. Students seen using the path during the school day will receive disciplinary consequences.

NHS PEER TUTORING PROGRAM 2012-13

The National Honor Society members offer an in-school tutoring program for any high school students who need extra help in their classes. Students who need extra help will be matched with a NHS member who will meet them once a week during a shared free period. This weekly meeting will continue as long as the student needing help stays in contact with their matched NHS member. If any student is interested in being matched with a tutor, they are to fill out the NHS Tutoring Form and return it to either Ms. Peppe (tpeppe@shsd.org) or Dr. Hogge (jhogge@shsd.org).
