Welcome Back Everyone! It sure has been a whirlwind week as we all get back into the swing of things. I hope everyone had a restful, productive summer filled with new adventures. My summer included a trip back to Maine where I took part in the defense of three doctoral students (my last!) and we got to lay on the beach and eat lobstah. I love the energy and excitement of the new semester, and look forward to seeing our students engage in their classes and find out more about themselves and the world.

The CoLA Faculty Retreat was held at Carillon Park this year as we discussed the state of the union, Wright State Branding and Campaign initiatives, and the college's focus this year on student retention. Over 150 faculty and staff attended the retreat and took advantage of our rich and productive Dayton history and congratulated our CoLA Outstanding Award recipients at an outdoor picnic. The award recipients are:
  • CoLA Faculty Excellence: Ava Chamberlain, Religion, Philosophy, & Classics
  • CoLA Outstanding Research: Paul Lockhart, History
  • CoLA Outstanding Teaching: Teressa McWilliams, Theatre, Dance, & Motion Pictures
  • CoLA Outstanding Professional Service: Carol Loranger, English Language & Literatures
  • CoLA Early Career Achievement: Shreya Bhandari, Social Work
  • CoLA Outstanding Community Engagement: Alpana Sharma, English Language & Literature
  • CoLA Outstanding Lecturer/Instructor Award: Frank Eguaroje, Sociology & Anthropology
  • CoLA Outstanding Adjunct Award: Paula Kraus, Art & Art History
  • CoLA Outstanding Staff Award: April Coppess, Music

You can see their smiling faces on the wall outside of the Dean's Office or read more about them here.

In addition, at the University Convocation and Faculty Awards Celebration this week Paul Lockhart, History, received the Brage Golding Distinguished Professor of Research Award and Shreya Bhandari, Social Work, received the President's Award of Excellence: Early Career Achievement. Congratulations Paul and Shreya!

I also want to congratulate Jane Blakelock, English, for receiving the Teacher of the Year award from the University Honors Program last year. Congratulations Jane!

Congratulations as well to Jennie Buckwalter, Assistant Dean for Community and Student Engagement. Jennie was named Class Representative for the 2014 Class of Leadership Dayton.

I'm proud that two CoLA Theatre Students, Mimi Klipstine-Dick and Paige Dobkins, received a Culture Works Leonard P. Roberts Memorial Scholarship for 2014. This competitive scholarship was open to all junior or senior college students in the area, and Mimi and Paige were two of just 4 students to receive this award! We will honor all our scholarship donors and recipients at the CoLA Donor Recognition Ceremony on November 2.
Wright State was well-represented at last weekend's outstanding FilmDayton Festival.  Congratulations to Jim Klein, Motion Pictures, who was presented with The Filmmaker Award to honor career achievement of excellence in filmmaking.

Jonathan McNeal, Motion Pictures graduate and current manager of The Neon, received The Key Award to honor special service to the filmmaking community.

I would also like to welcome our two new student workers:   Lydia McBride is a Sophomore English and Language Arts Education major who will provide assistance with a number of different projects in the Dean's Office.  Bridget Fantaci is a senior Mass Communication major who will serve as our Social Media guru, helping with photos and updates to our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts.  They will both be a great asset to the CoLA Dean's Office!

Well, one week in and we are already racking up the awards and kudos! For those of you with keen eyesight you will have noticed that this CoLA Weekly is no longer called the CoLA News so that we can better distinguish it from our CoLA Newsletter - coming out in September.

Remember to advertise all of your department's upcoming events in the University Calendar. Have a great Labor Day weekend!
