Spotlight On
A Portal
iTunes
The first and still the biggest by a long shot, iTunes started the legal download revolution in 2001 and opened the iTunes Store (originally the iTunes Music Store) in 2003.
Today iTunes is not just the market leader, it is the reference by which all other portals are judged, and effectively, scored.
iTunes boasts truly impressive figures with over 28 million songs, videos, apps and ebooks available in the iTunes Store. Revenues for 2011Q1 alone totalled almost US$1.4 billion and by 4 October 2011, the iTunes store had sold 16 billion songs. Not bad...
April 28 2013 will see the iTunes Store celebrate its 10th birthday. After 10 years, and with its 11th incarnation of the media player, sales continue to increase year on year, and its position as No. 1 seems, at this moment in time, pretty impregnable.

Platinum Album For DMF Entertainment!
The Source's Dutch music producers "De Muziekfabriek" (DMF), featuring siblings Rick and Linda Pols, have been busy collecting impressive accolades in December.
First of all, the "Kinderen Voor Kinderen" album "Hallo Wereld", for which they wrote one of the songs, went Platinum. Kinderen Voor Kinderen (Children For Children) is a Dutch children's choir that releases a charity album each year, featuring original songs about common society issues. Previous songwriters include high profile Dutch songwriters and Kinderen Voor Kinderen is very much a household name in Holland, so writing a song on one of the best selling albums of the year is truly quite an achievement.
As well as this, DMF were also winners in the yearly Dutch "Gouden Pepernootverkiezing" (Golden Pepernoot) awards.
Every year the Gouden Pepernoot awards take place in which the most popular media events of the year are rewarded. De Muziekfabriek won not one, but two awards: Best Song and Best Film (for which they produced the soundtrack and theme songs).
In Holland, the end of year festivities kick off with "Sinterklaas" in early December. Throughout the Sinterklaas festivities people eat "pepernoten" (small pieces of ginger bread) and the media is full of Sinterklaas-themed events, such as films, TV shows, music albums and special celebrations.

Spotify Rolling Out New Discovery Features (Finally...)
Starting this month Spotify is adding new features and making various improvments to its service. This will enable users to discover new music more easily via their Follow and Discover tabs, making the service a far more personal and sociable experience. Although these changes may seem minor, the impact on the user experience will be significant, and these are the most important changes to the service since it launched in 2008. Via the "Follow" tab, Spotify users can access information regarding the music their friends and the celebrity users or artists they are following are listening to. This is a really important social feature which can have a big influence when used well. What this also means is that artists will have a direct 1 to 1 link with each of their fans and followers enabling them to communicate directly with their fanbase regarding artist news, general promotion, or for passing on a recommendation, etc. With its "Discover" tab, Spotify will point users towards new artists and playlists according to what they are listening to or have in their own library, as well as include reviews and concerts of appropriate artists.
It is worth taking a few minutes to check these options out and see how they could benefit you.
