This success story was written by one of MAS' Forever Family members:
Several years ago our family lost one of our two cherished dogs. This spring, we began our search for a new dog as a companion to us and our remaining dog. While looking for a young yellow lab, we were told by a kind Metro Animal Services Officer of a yellow lab that was currently available for adoption. I promptly set out to visit the Metro Animal Services facility near my work in Puyallup. The yellow lab was adorable, but she was older and housed in a kennel with a buddy that was expected to be adopted with her; an older black, overweight female lab that the facility had named "Betty". We were not looking for two dogs; nor were we looking for an older dog. But there was just something about "Betty" that tugged at me.
A week later, animal control advised me that the yellow lab had been adopted and that "Betty" was still waiting for a home. My husband and I quickly visited her and loved her immediately. We then brought our old dog, Titus, to visit with her and see how they would get along with each other. Titus had never been too fond of other dogs, but our last black lab had been an exception. We knew that "Betty" could be a long shot, but, fingers crossed, it was worth the try. When the two dogs met for the first time, they not only got along, but our old dog Titus showed signs of adoration and love for another dog that we had never seen from him in all of his 13 years.
"Betty" became ours and within the first few days, she also had a strong hold on my husband's heart. Not an easy feat for a dog. Our family, to include our adult sons, voted on a new name for her and all decided she needed to be called Lady. (Our previous black lab was named "Girlie" and "Lady" seemed perfect for the new member of the family) Lady was put on a diet of good food and great exercise right away that allowed her to lose weight slowly and bring back good health and energy. Along with 10 acres of land to roam, a pond and a freshwater creek, she also quickly became attached to our horse and ducks...all in a good way!
My husband is retired and has a new friend who roams the acreage with him. Our old dog has a pal that keeps him feeling younger and younger. And, our family has that empty spot now filled by a dog that is so sweet and loyal that it is difficult to put into words.
We have been so grateful to the Metro Animal Services and the great care that they take in their adoptions. We like to think that ours was one of the finest adoptions they have done!
