Springtime Tips for Pet Owners

Here are some tips to keep in mind now that Spring has arrived:

*  Placing screens on your windows will help keep pets from escaping when the window is open to let in fresh air.  Also, this will help prevent snoozing cats from falling out the open window!
*  Now that the sun will be out more (hopefully!) it's best to leave pets home safe instead of taking them with you on errands and leaving them in the car.  Cars can overheat very quickly so risking your pet's life, health and safety isn't worth the risk...or the ticket you may receive if Animal Control has to remove your pet for safety.
*  Since Fluffy and Rover will be spending more time outdoors, be sure your yard is escape-proof by fixing fences and kennels.  Having your pet microchipped and licensed will make it easier to reunite you with your four-legged family member should they go on the lamb, and licensing is required by law.
*  Keep pets from eating those poisonous spring plants such as daffodils, azaleas, many types of lilies, tulip bulbs and hyacinth bulbs (to name a few). Check this link to the Humane Society for more information:  http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/plants_poisonous_to_pets.html
*  Be sure to keep pets from getting into areas with fertilizer and/or pesticides.  Even if they don't directly eat these chemicals, they can still ingest them from licking their paws that may have these poisons on them.
*  Make sure that pets do not eat any leftover Easter chocolate...or any other type of chocolate for that matter!  Let your children know that chocolate can make your pet sick.
*  Protect your cats and dogs by using flea, tick and heartworm prevention.  Check with your vet for information about this.
*  If your dog has been inside all winter, remember to gradually lead into exercise.  You can't expect them to jump right into running a marathon with you.
*  Make sure antifreeze has been cleaned up and stored properly.
*  Always have a fresh supply of water available for you pets, indoors and outdoors.
April is Heartworm Awareness Month

"Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets in the United States and many other parts of the world. It is caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body.

Heartworm disease affects dogs, cats and ferrets, but heartworms also live in other mammal species, including wolves, coyotes, foxes, sea lions and-in rare instances-humans. Because wild species such as foxes and coyotes live in proximity to many urban areas, they are considered important carriers of the disease."  From Pet Rescue Rx.

Petunia's Success Story!

Metro picked up a stray pot-bellied pig that arrived with a serious skin issue. She was extremely itchy and likely suffering with a very common pet pig problem - mange.  The shelter dubbed her "Petunia", it just seemed to fit.  Her personality was extremely people oriented - obviously a pet before her arrival.  She'd scratch herself on anything she could rub on; pet food dishes, the wall, the gate, anything upright.  She was damaging her skin to the point of bleeding.  She received treatment for the mange and recovered.
Petunia was adopted by a great Forever Family who couldn't be happier with her and she is extremely happy with them!  Her skin continues to improve.
Metro does receive many different kinds of animals, so check our website often for animals who need their own Forever Families.
