 Paws a Moment

Issue 19

Happy Howl-idays!

We had a great time celebrating the holidays with many of you in the Sumner and Puyallup Santa Parades.
Looking Back at 2014

Success has many faces at Metro Animal Services.  From the folks you never see who make policy decisions, to our Animal Control Officers, Shelter Assistant, Kennel Technician and our Volunteers who donated 4,600 hours of their time this year.

Secondly, we want to recognize our adopters who were responsible for 322 pets finding their Forever Families!

The shelter staff makes every effort to unite each pet with the right Forever Family.  Not every pet turned in is ready for the adoption program here at the shelter. Some are shy and stressed, some are nervous, and some need some minor medical attention before consideration for adoption.

We are fortunate to be able to work with qualified rescue organizations that can take the animals into foster homes, work with these animals in a home-like environment, and attend to some of the minor medical needs necessary before placing an animal into an approved Forever Family.

This year alone, local area rescue groups have adopted 255 animals.  Thank you from your Metro Team.  We are all in this together to keep people and pets safe.

Winter Pet Safety Tips

Please follow a few simple tips to keep your pets safe and comfortable in winter.

  • When the weather is severe, bring your pets inside and make sure they have a warm place to sleep at night.
  • Don't leave your pets unattended in a cold car.
  • Watch out for cold weather chemicals that can be problematic for pets, such as antifreeze and ice melters.
  • Remember to thoroughly dry pets after bathing them and consider lessening the frequency of your pets' grooming appointments; their longer fur will help them stay warmer.
  • Be mindful of your holiday décor and potential hazards including wrapped presents under the tree.
  • Whether your four legged companion was naughty or nice this year, you're still likely to purchase him a few gifts.  Remember to make sure they are safe and healthy.

Woof and Whiskers Update

Metro Animal Services would like to thank FAYMAS for their generous donations to the Woof and Whiskers Project. FAYMAS is a non-profit organization with a mission to improve the quality of shelter animals' lives, promote spay & neuter services and increase pet adoptions at the Metro Animal Shelter. You can help too. Go to FAYMAS.org  for membership and donation information or Like us on Facebook.

You can also help us reach our goal! You can support the Woof and Whiskers Project by donating online or by purchasing a Metro Animal Services 2015 Calendar highlighting people and pets within our communities. Calendars are available at the shelter.

Proceeds from Woof and Whiskers go towards the purchase of new cat kennels for the shelter.
