Gene's Double Adoption
Sometimes, finding a Forever Family can be tricky, and we at Metro realize that we're serving people as well as the pets. Recently, Metro received a stray and happily adopted him to Gene, a gentleman who recently experienced some heavy personal losses, one of which was his beloved Boston Terrier. This dog matched him perfectly, and they were very happy together.
Then, the original owner later came forward, looking for their pet. Per Washington law, the adoption needs to be rescinded, and the dog reunited with its original owner. Gene was understandably devastated.
As things would have it, another Boston Terrier was brought in by its owner for surrender to the shelter for adoption. This one wasn't from our jurisdiction, but our shelter technician, Julia, asked if she could contact Gene. The owner agreed. Gene hurried right down to meet the dog, and it was love at first sight. The dog was trying to run on the floor to greet Gene as he came in. After a little discussion, the owner decided Gene was the right home for her dog and gifted her to him. Gene is now the happy owner of a Boston Terrier again.
We were overjoyed to have a potentially hurtful situation turn out so well for everyone. Congratulations to Gene and his new best friend. Metro even received a letter of gratitude from Mayor John Knutsen of partner city Puyallup. Kudos to Julia for going the extra mile to help one of our citizens have that happy ending!

(Warning: if you don't like pictures of snakes, don't keep scrolling down!)
Did you know? Metro is responsible for enforcing ordinances for more than dogs and cats. We also get calls about livestock and other exotic pets. Your city likely has restrictions on what types of other pets you can own. For example, Metro recently was informed about several large constrictor snakes that were being kept in violation of city codes. Upon investigation and speaking with the snake's owners, it was determined to have them removed to a rescue organization that is skilled in the care and husbandry of these animals. This was a win for the owner who knew the snakes would be cared for by people who understood and appreciated their uniqueness and a win for the animals won as they received species specific care suited to them.
If you want to own unusual pets, please contact Metro first to help determine what is allowed where you live. We want ALL pets to be well cared for with their Forever Family and will help make sure that is a possibility where you live or we can direct you to shelters or rescues if you are not able to keep your pet where you live for whatever reason.
