Protect Your Pet from Threats

Zeus
Zeus was a pet in distress who was rescued by Metro Animal Services.

April is Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month and increased awareness is the first step towards cracking down on the mistreatment of animals.  Get involved and show your support all year long by learning to identify the potential signs of animal cruelty, which may include unexplained injuries, emaciated appearance and unsanitary living conditions.  Another common form of mistreatment is neglect such as leaving an animal outside in extreme weather conditions or leaving an animal unattended in a hot vehicle for any amount of time.  If you suspect an animal is being abused or neglected, contact your local law enforcement agency or area shelter and report it, right away.  Consider adding our phone number (253-299-PETS) to your cell phone so that you can call from a parking lot if you see an animal in distress or loose and in danger.

Don't Sweat Your Pet

Summer is just around the corner, and as we start to experience warmer temperatures, we all need to be mindful of our pets and their heat safety.  It may sound appealing to take your furry friend for a drive in the sunshine.  But, keep in mind that any length of time for an animal in a hot car can pose a threat to their health, potentially causing dehydration or even heat stroke.  Consider the following safety tips prior to making any road trip with your pet:

  • Familiarize yourself with some of the common symptoms of dehydration and heat stroke such as heavy panting and profuse salivating.
  • Always have plenty of water on hand.
  • Make frequent stops to allow for water and bathroom breaks
  • Never leave your animal unattended in a parked car, even "for a minute."  Even a cool breezy spring day can heat up a car quickly.

If you notice an animal left alone in a parked car, contact your local law enforcement agency or Metro at 299-PETS if you are within our seven cities).

Spring has Sprung...and so has Kitten Season!

Kitten season is among us and proves a gentle reminder on the importance of spaying and neutering cats.  From now through the fall, there are countless homeless litters that flood shelters, nation-wide.  Thanks to our partnership with Tacoma's Northwest Spay and Neuter Transport Program, Metro Animal Services offers you convenient, affordable spay and neuter options.

Contact Metro Animal Services today at 253-299-PETS or adoptions@ci.sumner.wa.us  to schedule for the next Transport Program pick up on Thursday, May 15th.
