Spring 2014
In Their Own Words
"When I speak English I will be able to talk to my doctor.  Now my pastor's wife goes to the doctor with me to speak English.  I want to go to the doctor by myself."  - Caterina, ESOL student

Each spring, LVGH tutors work with students like Caterina to write articles for Express Your Ideas, our annual student publication.  Students may write about what brought them to LVGH, what it's been like to come back to school as adults, or even reveal their goals and dreams.

Here are a few excerpts from this year's newsletter:

"In my country, I didn't have a chance to go to school because there was war and we didn't have any money. My goal for now is to go to school because I need to improve my reading and writing. I want to be able to communicate with my children's teachers and help my children with their home work. My future goal is to be able to get my G.E.D. and study to be a nurse."  - Oretha, Basic Literacy

"Learning to read means a lot to me.  If I know how to read, I can read a newspaper, signs in the street, and a map."  - Dania, Basic Literacy

5th Annual Gala a Success!
Our 5th Annual Gala was held April 5th at The Farmington Club.  150 attendees enjoyed a four-course dinner, silent auction, music, and cheered on UConn as they beat Florida in the Final Four!
Todd Piro of NBC Connecticut entertained guests as our master of ceremonies, and Basic Literacy tutor Edlyn Blitzer, our keynote speaker, inspired everyone by sharing her experiences (to read Edlyn's speech, click here).

In total, the Gala grossed over $50,000 for LVGH's adult literacy programs!  Continue reading
