A New Citizen
|
Congratulations to student Yasser Hakim, who recently became a United States citizen! Yasser is a native of Syria who attends ESOL and Citizenship classes at the Hartford Literacy Center. He is the fourth LVGH student to become an American citizen this year. |
Feeling Thankful
|
We are heading into the Thanksgiving week feeling very thankful indeed.
Because of you, we are almost two-thirds of the way to our Annual Fund goal of raising $50,000 for our adult literacy programs! Thank you so much to those who have already contributed.
If you've already contributed, why not encourage friends and family to share your support for LVGH by forwarding this email to them? The upcoming nationwide #GivingTuesday event (see right) is a great opportunity to get others involved.
With your support, we can achieve our vision of a fully literate Greater Hartford. Our students thank you.
"I want to say thank you for contributing to my education in a new country. Here I learn English and culture. For example, how people in the US donate their money and their time." - Maribell, ESOL student
"Thank you for giving to LVGH so that people like me can go back to school. I want to get my GED, and now I can learn in a place that feels like home to me." - Stephanie, Basic Literacy student

LVGH and Comcast Launch Partnership
|
This year, we are partnering with Comcast to ensure that our students and their families have access to low-cost internet service and the skills they need to use it. Comcast has donated netbooks for use in our classrooms, produced a PSA for us that aired throughout October, and is also sponsoring computer workshops at our Hartford Literacy Center. NPR Series on Adult Literacy
|
In case you missed it, NPR recently produced a four-part series on adult literacy and education in the United States. The personal stories they cover illustrate the everyday challenges faced by adults with low English literacy - and the perseverance they have to keep trying. These will be familiar to anyone who has worked with our students here at LVGH. Check out the series here! |
