The Maverick Baseball team is having their spirit night Dec 9th at the west side Chick-fil-A. Stop by and support the baseball team and spin to win some great prizes.

The MSHS Chemistry students celebrated Mole Day on October 17. The day is set aside to celebrate the very important unit of measurement, the MOLE. In Chemistry, the mole represents the number 6.02 x 1023, just like dozen represents the number 12.

The students kicked off the week with the Flashlight Mole Hunt for the Golden Beaker on Tuesday evening October 15, at 7:00 pm. The winners were Spencer Bruner, Drake Bliss, and Connor Cook. In this scavenger hunt, students had to solve riddles and science problems in order to get clues to the location of the mole holding the golden beaker. About 50 students participated in this event.

On the morning of the 17th, the group of students pictured below, met at 3:00 am in Mrs. Stockam's room to prepare breakfast for fellow chemistry students.

Breakfast was served at 5:30 am. Over 90 Chemistry I and Chemistry II students indulged in biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, pancakes, potato sausage casserole, fruit and drinks. Everyone paused for a "molement" of silence at 6:02 a.m.

Following breakfast, the students went to the gym to participate in the Mole Day games. Activities included marshmallow shooting at mole targets, mole dropping race, mole bucket head and mole golf.

Throughout the day, the Chemistry classes watched the student produced Mole Day projects, including; videos, poems, mole rap battles and karimolke.

The chemistry students also selected "moyalty" for the occasion. The honored students were:

Mole Princess -

Ryann Burnett

Mole Prince -

Kevin West

Mole Queen -

Gabby Buckner

Mole King -

Cole Christain

Parent Newsletter

November 2013

Hello Maize South community,

It's been a great start to the second term. We have had a great first nine weeks of the 2013-14 school year, and we continue to have success both academically and athletically in just our fifth year of existence. First of all I would like to thank our outstanding faculty and staff for the work they do with our MSHS student body. We continue to look for strategies to connect, engage and challenge our students, both inside and outside of the classroom. We continue to review our processes to make sure we are developing our students academically and socially to prepare them for college and the work force.

I would like to give you a small example of some of the success we are having at MSHS. On the weekend of Oct. 25-27 I watched our football team beat an undefeated Hesston team to win the District Championship. On Saturday I traveled to Newton and watched our boys' and girls' cross-country teams win Regional Championships. Later that evening I attended our choir performance "An American Festival". Needless to say I was extremely proud to be a Maize South Maverick by the time Saturday was over. Those are just a few of the great things going on at MSHS.

We have several big events in the near future that are sponsored by our Booster Club. The Maverick Round-up is on Friday, Nov. 8, and "Run with the Bulls" is on Saturday, Nov. 16. Thank you to the Booster Club for supporting our students in both athletics and activities.

To follow what's going on at MSHS you can access www.avctl.org for athletic and activity schedules.

Also, the MSHS administrative team has a twitter account, @MAVprinciBULL. Follow us to keep up to date on the happenings at MSHS.

Thank you MSHS students and parents for making Maize South a great place to teach and work.

Go Mavs!

November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month

Being a teenager is an adventure. From driving to dating, sports to activities, homework to your first job, teenagers face big challenges. Teens who have epilepsy (also known as seizure disorders) face other big challenges too--such as explaining seizures to other people; wondering how their friends are going to react; and never knowing when the next seizure's going to happen.

A big challenge is the fact that other teens may not know much about epilepsy. Nobody wants to be different, but sometimes there are differences that affect people's lives.

Please click here, take a few minutes and read some facts about seizures (epilepsy) and first aid actions to take if a person has a seizure in your presence. This information is from the National Epilepsy Foundation website at www.epilepsyfoundation.org. The website is full of information for people with epilepsy, their friends, family, co-workers, and school staff.

 Math Highlights

Students take a quick break from doing quadrilateral concept maps in Mr. Shelly's geometry class by playing rock, paper, scissors.

Students in Mr. Shelly's Algebra 1B class took time in class to make books explaining the Laws of Exponents with definitions, examples, and common mistakes.

The next two pictures are from a project  Mr. Simmon's class  did following a unit about quadrilaterals (4 sided shapes).  There are 6 specific kinds that  they  explored:  parallelograms, rhombi, rectangles, squares, isosceles trapezoids and kites.  Each of these shapes can be identified by their diagonal properties (ex, whether the diagonals are congruent, bisecting, perpendicular).

The students used the spaghetti as diagonals, marshmallows as intersection points, and frosting to fasten the diagonals to a piece of paper.  They then had to measure the side lengths after the shapes dried to verify if the shapes they created were indeed what they intended to create.  Each of those 6 specific kinds of shapes have side length properties also.  They then had to reflect on why they may have had errors either small or large.

This was very challenging for the students to make a shape that wasn't any others.  For example, a parallelogram's diagonals bisect each other, but students were using to lengths of spaghetti that were the same length.  So because their side lengths are congruent, they actually made a rectangle.  So then they had to realize that to make JUST A PARALLELOGRAM, they had to shorten one diagonal but still make sure they intersected at the midpoint of both.  They had to do this kind of deductive reasoning and comparisons for each of the six shapes to make sure they made a rhombus that wasn't a square, a rectangle that wasn't a rhombus, and so on.

It was fun.  And tasty!
