To Members of the Greater Hen Hud Community:
I never cease to be amazed by the accomplishments of students and staff in the Hendrick Hudson School District. There are a number of stories in this issue of The Lanyard that underscore my pride.
Blue Mountain Middle School observed Red Ribbon Week in October, focusing on efforts to stem drug and alcohol abuse in young teens. The following weeks featured dynamic presentations - for both students and staff - from adolescent brain expert Michael Nerney and diversity consultant James Childs.
Don't miss the story of Chato's Kitchen, a delightful student-produced puppet show. The program demonstrates Hen Hud's K-through-12 philosophy at its best, an interdisciplinary, multi-cultural and multi-grade activity that brought creativity, fun, and learning to all of the participants. I was honored to attend.
In November and December, Hendrick Hudson continued its work on College and Career Readiness by hosting workshops for teachers and staff. The group, led by education consultant Dick Jones, of the Career Readiness Institute discussed how, in today's culture and economy, we can make the best use of post-high-school credentialing, whether it be a two- or four-year college degree, career training and certification, or a combination of both.

During these workshops, a key group goal was to find new ways to encourage students, teachers, and parents to view college through a new lens, without some of the stereotypes and prestige issues that can complicate decisions about where and when to go to college. This work is essential to fulfilling our promise to graduate students who are both enthusiastic about, and prepared for, real-world opportunities.
Now that we are in the period leading up to Winter Recess, we hope you'll continue to take time to read with your younger children - and encourage your older ones to read -- even when school is out. You are always a vital participant in your child's education, and we are proud to partner with you.
Happy Holidays!

Schools Share Successes and Data with the Board of Education
In November, all five of our Hendrick Hudson schools presented progress reports to the Board of Education. Among the information offered were bulleted lists indicating "What We're Proud of"-three key achievements so far this academic year; and "Areas of Focus" - two current initiatives. Here are some of the key points from each school's report:
- Furnace Woods Elementary School - Points of pride include positive feedback from a parent survey, progress in math, and a high level of parental involvement. Furnace Woods is focused on guided and independent reading, as well as Response to Intervention (RTI)*.
- Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School - The school is proud of its student leadership opportunities, increases in student reading levels, and the B-V educational community's understanding of RTI. Buchanan-Verplanck is focused on literacy and continues its emphasis on RTI.
- Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School - Frank G. Lindsey takes pride in its math progress across grades K-5, its RTI team and process, and its Principal's Cabinet. Areas of focus include literacy and transforming regular faculty meetings into Professional Learning Communities.
- Blue Mountain Middle School - The school takes pride in its Common Core State Assessment results being consistent with pre-Common Core performance, addressing the emotional, social and academic needs of students, and its realistic and appropriate incorporation of Common Core Standards. Areas of focus are aligning the school's Student Intervention Services, and providing College and Career Readiness for all.
- Hendrick Hudson High School - Hen Hud High School is immensely proud of having been recognized as one of the Top 500 High Schools in the U.S. by Newsweek, and of its students' successes in the arts, athletics and academics. Areas of focus at the high school are student services and enhancing classroom instruction. "We need to continue celebrating our students and staff and the environment for the success that they create at Hendrick Hudson," said High School Principal James Mackin.
"What I enjoy most about these presentations is they provide an opportunity for the community to hear about all of the great programs, staff and initiatives happening in the schools," said Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter. "Oftentimes we are so focused on testing data that we may forget about all of the other positive initiatives which current data systems are not measuring. It's wonderful for the schools to share their excitement and give a window into their day-to-day activities impacting learning."
The full reports are available HERE at Board Docs, under the dates Nov. 12 and Nov. 25.
*RTI is a method of academic intervention used in schools to provide early, systematic assistance to children who are having difficulty learning. RTI seeks to prevent academic failure through early intervention, frequent progress measurement, and increasingly intensive research-based instructional interventions.

Middle School Offers Thought-Provoking Programs

Brain expert
Michael Nerney.

Thinking About the Brain and Behavior
On November 3, Blue Mountain Middle School students and faculty spent part of their day thinking about their brains. Noted brain expert Michael Nerney, who is a former teacher, visited to speak to them about the adolescent brain, which covers an age range that he defines as lasting from about age 13 to 23.
Nerney spoke with sixth, seventh, and eight grade groups as well as to the faculty in a longer, after-school session. And although each group's presentation was tailored to the audience, the general picture that emerged was that much of what adults deem to be annoying, self-centered, sometimes reckless, and even vain behavior is really completely normal and part of the developmental process.

Understanding Diversity
"Yes, you can judge a book by its cover; you just can't do it well." So says James Childs, a widely recognized diversity consultant who has been working recently with students at Blue Mountain Middle School to address the topic of diversity.
Childs likes to emphasize what he calls STAR behavior, with STAR representing Sensitivity - Trust - Appreciation - Respect. "We're going to talk about and simplify our attitudes toward difference and figure out how we get to that STAR behavior," he said before the program began.
Asked what diversity means to him, Childs replied, "All the similarities and differences that we carry around with us. It's either characteristics you were born with, an experience that you've had, or a choice that you've made. It's possible to have diversity and not have inclusion. [The question is] how do we make people feel valuable, not in spite of their differences, but because of their differences."

Friendship and Understanding on the Menu at "Chato's Kitchen"
 | |
"Chato," the big orange cat, makes friends with his mice neighbors.
|
During the first week in November, Mrs. Jan Aiello's ninth-grade Accelerated Art students at Hendrick Hudson High School used the magic of puppetry to bring to life the book Chato's Kitchen, by Gary Soto.
Chato's Kitchen is the delightful story of Chato, a very cool cat (gato) who lives in East Los Angeles. When a family of mice (ratoncitos) moves in to the neighborhood, Chato's first plan is to invite them over for dinner - as one of the menu items. But when the ratoncitos arrive accompanied by their good friend, a dog, Chato and his pal Novio Boy decide that becoming friends is not such a bad idea after all. With lively Latin music playing, all the animals enjoy dinner and dancing.

Did You Know?
Frank G. Lindsey School is reprising its One Million Minutes reading challenge this year, under the title "Million Plus Minutes." Last year's school-wide effort resulted in students having read for close to 700,000 minutes; this year the sky's the limit!
Buchanan-Verplanck School hosted a Teddy Bear Clinic on December 4, with the district's pediatrician, Dr. Michael Lasser, "treating" various stuffed animal ailments and sharing valuable science and wellness lessons in the process.
Also on December 4, Furnace Woods School welcomed naturalists from Teatown Lake Reservation. Animals and their behavior were the focus of the presentation, which held students spellbound. Among the live animals presented were a salamander, a turtle, and an owl.
Blue Mountain Middle School has been presenting wellness activities designed to offer students a respite from some of the stress that goes with being an adolescent. The Guidance Team spearheaded this program. Some of the activities offered so far this academic year were Mindfulness/Meditation; World Drumming; Yoga; Origami; Beginner Guitar; and a Nature Walk.
In December, Hendrick Hudson High School sent three young musicians to the NYSSMA All State Music Festival, along with two alternates. Jodi Scharf and Cassandra Cavalieri, Symphony Orchestra, and Katherine Johnson, Mixed Choir, achieved this honor. Maddie Tufanio, Mixed Chorus, and Michael Migliore, Jazz Bass, were selected as alternates -- also a grand achievement.
