Shutting Down the School to Prison Pipeline
Shepard Broad College of Law
 September 18, 2015  8:00 am to 5:30 pm

NSU Law, the Nova Law Review, and a broad coalition of nonprofit organizations have come together to build a national platform to address the crisis of unnecessary incarceration for teens.  Academics, practitioners, policy-makers, educators, community activists, and thought leaders are invited to exchange ideas, form effective strategies, and engage in meaningful dialogue about systemic change for educational reform, and new approaches to school discipline.

"Shutting Down the School to Prison Pipeline," which is co-sponsored with Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyer's Association, American Civil Liberties Union, Miami Dade Public Defender Office, and the Anti-Defamation League, will examine the practice of funneling school disciplinary matters into the criminal justice system, which stigmatizes the children and disrupts learning.

For additional information, contact Nova Law Review at lawreview@nsu.law.nova.edu or Kerry Valdez, Editor-in-Chief, kv238@nova.edu or (954) 856-0657.  Registration coming soon.

Mediation requires skills that are different than those needed for litigation. Although it may be tempting to view Mediation as a hurdle to clear on the way to trial, developing good mediation skills can often help attorneys achieve a better outcome for their clients. If maintaining control of the case and keeping matters confidential is important to your client, then taking time to develop your mediation skills is a wise investment in your professional development. At this seminar, you will learn about selecting a mediator, timing the mediation, preparing your client, developing collaborative skills and more. Florida's Mediation Confidentiality and Privilege Act will be examined and an interactive exercise using a case fact pattern is included.

Jane E. Cross, Associate Professor and Director of Caribbean Law Programs, was quoted in an article that  was published July 2, 2015 in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) Beacon. The article discusses whether or not gay marriage is arguably legal in the BVI. Cross spoke about the fundamental rights provisions in the BVI Constitution and whether gay marriage would be permitted.  She notes that, while the BVI Constitution prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, some constitutional provisions carve out exceptions to its protections from discrimination.  Those exceptions encompass a number of laws including those related to marriage.  Cross said it is not clear, however, whether the marriage laws in BVI actually discriminate based on sexual orientation.
