Law Center Plus is a new program that provides ongoing skills training and other resources for our alumni, especially our newest members.  A series of ten seminars each year will include practice skills that will build confidence among new attorneys and educate all our alumni seeking to improve their knowledge and skills in a variety of areas.  These seminars will be held monthly on Friday mornings at the Law Center and are free to alumni in their first two years post-graduation.  All other alumni and friends may attend for a registration fee.  All attendees will get a continental breakfast and CLE credits. The Honorable Renee Goldenberg Received NSU Law's Distinguished Alumni Award

On November 13, 2014, the Honorable Renee Goldenberg received the Distinguished Alumni Award on behalf of NSU Shepard Broad at a reception held at the Grand Oaks Golf Club.  The Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award is the highest and most prestigious honor that NSU bestows upon its graduates. The program recognizes alumni who are changing lives and changing the world by demonstrating a record of distinguished service and extraordinary achievement in a particular profession, discipline, organization or community cause.

These awards pay tribute to alumni who have made outstanding contributions to their professions and/or community, have great pride for their alma mater, and are committed to advancing NSU's values and goals.

Dean Garon Shares the Shepard Broad Ten-Year Commitment

On November 18, Dean Jon M. Garon addressed the Stephen R. Booher Inns of Court, the chartered Broward County chapter of the American Inns of Court that includes many Shepard Broad alumni among its membership, and shared the Shepard Broad alumni commitment, a ten-year partnership between the law school and its graduates, beginning on the day of matriculation and lasting through the formative years of training to pass the bar and launch a successful practice, and continuing until our alumni begin making partner at their firms. The ten-year pathway to partnership is just part of the continued commitment of the Shepard Broad Law Center to innovation in legal education and leadership in the future of the practice of law, and Dean Garon hopes the relationship continues with alumni support of the law school as part of their lifelong experience as lawyers and professionals using legal education.

The Shepard Broad bar preparation program represents one of the strongest programs under this partnership. The newly launched Law Center Plus program of free CLE education to alumni
in their first two years following graduation represents another resource that supports the school's commitment to our alumni. Alumni events, use of the Career Services office, and other aspects of the NSU community further this commitment.

The NSU Shepard Broad Assistant Law Center's Dean of Career and Professional Development, Robert Levine, is available at [email protected] to answer any questions regarding the Career and Professional Development Office.

NSU Law Takes Top Honors at Buffalo-Niagara Mock Trial Competition

NSU Law students Berkin Aslan, Brandon Dinetz, Andrew Jaffe, and Ivan Rodriguez traveled to Buffalo to compete in the 11th annual Buffalo-Niagara Mock Trial Competition. The competition featured the best trial advocacy programs in the country. Law students tried both sides of a homicide case before experienced judges and trial attorneys who volunteered as judges and evaluators.  This mock trial involved a case of mayoral conspiracy and attempted murder. The NSU Law team competed against thirty-six other schools from across the nation.  NSU Law was selectively chosen to compete at this invitational and was a quarterfinalist in the competition.

Students prepared for the case during the semester before the competition and based on their performance, a team of four students was formed. The NSU Law team was coached by adjunct professor of law, Ted Daus ('91), and former Nova Trial Association president, Brian Engel ('12). Professors Megan Chaney and Mark Dobson worked closely with the team and their coaches, highlighting the national impact of NSU's trial advocacy program.

William Dandy Middle School Students Participate in Mock Trial at NSU Law

NSU Shepard Broad Law Center hosted students from Broward County's William Dandy Middle School on November 17, 2014. The students participated in a mock trial activity to learn some of the key elements of being an effective advocate. The mock trial was presented by law students from the Black Law Student Association, adjunct professor of law Charles (Chuck) B. Morton, Jr., and professor and director of paralegal studies, Jessica Garcia-Brown ('99). The Law Center provided students with information on how to get into law school and what they can do with a law degree, a question and answer session, and a visit to the Law Center's courtroom. Through this program, Shepard Broad Law Center aims to inspire these students to continue on the path of higher education and ultimately, consider a career in law.
