August 19, 2013 - Professionalism Day  6:00 to 9:45 pm. This event is held during Orientation Week for our 1L students.  This year, Mitchell W. Berger, founding partner of Berger Singerman, will deliver the keynote speech. Law alumni are invited to participate in the panel discussion with their colleagues, the purpose of which is to educate the incoming class about ethics and the practice of law. You can receive CLE credits from The Florida Bar for being a panelist in the interactive exercises. If you have any questions, please contact Bernadette Baugh at 954-262-6018.  To register to participate as a panelist, just click here

 Gun Control Seminar
October 11, 2013Gun Control in American & Jewish Law.  The NSU Law Alumni Association & the South Florida Center for Jewish Ethics (SFCJE) are collaborating to bring you an interesting discussion on a timely topic from different perspectives.   
Time:     Check-in 11:30 am in atrium.  Seminar begins at 12 Noon and ends at  2:00 pm
CLE:      2.0 CLE hours (general) are pending approval from The Florida Bar
Lunch:   Provided by the SFCJE (dietary laws observed). 
Cost:      Attorneys: $25 early bird (pay by 9/26/13); $36 regular (after 9/26/13).  Non-Attorneys: $20 pay in advance. * NSU Law students, NSU law faculty & members of the judiciary are free but must pre-register to reserve a seat.
Speakers: NSU Law Professor Areto Imoukhuede; The Honorable Peter Weinstein, Chief Judge - Broward's 17th Judicial Circuit; and Rabbi Akiva Zweig, Outreach Director at Talmudic University.

November 1, 2013 - Managing Cognitive Decline in the Chronically Ill:  An Inter-Professional Approach.  Scheduled for a Friday afternoon, this seminar will examine how legal, medical, and psychological professionals can assist their clients and patients who suffer from chronic illnesses and, as a result, have needs that involve multiple professionals.  Presented by practitioners and faculty from NSU Law and NSU Health Professions Division, this seminar will be presented at the NSU Lifelong Learning Institute adjacent to the NSU campus in Davie, FL.  CLE credits will be available.

February 2014: NSU Law's Annual Symposium:  
The symposium topic this year is focused on our environment. The program, Energy, Climate Disruption, and Sea Level Rise:  New Directions in Law and Policy, will be presented in early February. Law Professors Joel Mintz, Richard Grosso, and Brion Blackwelder are collaborating to put together an excellent program that includes speakers from various disciplines and agencies.  More details coming soon.

Pete D'Alessandro (JD 1994) was named the new general manager of the Sacramento Kings basketball team on June 17, 2013.  He spent the past 3 seasons with the Denver Nuggets.  To read more about him click here.

 

Lisa Callahan (JD 2011) will be honored by Broward Legal Aid and Coast to Coast Legal Aid on September 27, 2013 at the 12th Annual For the Public Good  awards banquet.  Lisa will receive the Volunteer of the Year award.  Read more about her and the awards banquet in Class Actions by clicking the link below.

Faculty News Professor Jani Maurer

   

Law Professor Jani Maurer was recently honored by the Craig S. Barnard Chapter of the American Inns of Court for her 25 years of service and dedication to the Inn.  More than 200 members of the local Bar and Judiciary from Palm Beach County were present.  She has mentored many of our law students throughout the years.

NSU Law Student Sworn in as Florida Bar Law Student Division President
 
Danielle Kaye (3L), pictured at right, was selected President of The Florida Bar Law Student Division  and was sworn in by Florida Supreme Court Justice Peggy Quince. Kaye will serve as President for the 2013-2014 year and expects to expand the mentoring program across all 12 law school chapters, hoping to bridge the gap between law school and law practice for young lawyers.  Read more about her, just click here

 

NSU Law's Veterans Clinic Advocates at the Army Reserve 724th MilitaVeterans Clinic at MP Battalionry Police Battalion

      

Veterans Clinic Director, Jayme Cassidy, along with Nova Pro Bono Honor Students provided legal education and counsel to 35 Army Reservists on the topic of removing legal barriers to employment. The following Nova Law students participated: Zarinah St. Lawrence, Michelle Avis, Leer Gloger, Sara Mammarella, Patrick Zalman, and Lauren Taylor Clifton.

The NSU Alumni cruise we were planning for February 20- 24, 2014 needs to be rescheduled due to circumstances beyond our control.    I am working with the NSU Alumni Association on a new date with better options for all of our alumni.  Once we have the arrangements confirmed with the cruise line, I will let you know the new dates. The NSU Alumni Association wants to give you a great alumni cruise experience!  Stay tuned....
