FEATURED SUPPLEMENT
|
 | OraMune TF |
|
OraMune TF contains two ingredients: colostrum and transfer factor. Colostrum is the pre-milk of mammals. It is rich in immune and growth factors. One of those factors is called transfer factor. The transfer factor in OraMune TF is isolated and concentrated hundreds of times beyond what is found in colostrum. Transfer factor is an immune system adaptogen. It boosts immunity where necessary against foreign and transformed cells and quiets immune response in allergy and autoimmunity.

FEATURED LAB TEST
| ANA
 |
ANA is an abbreviation for Anti-Nuclear Antibody. This is a blood test for autoimmunity. It measures antibody produced against DNA, which is found in the nucleus of cells. DNA is your blueprint for all the chemicals that comprise you. It's not a good thing to have your immune system recognize your genetic code as a hostile threat. ANA is a test readily available from any commercial medical laboratory. A positive (abnormal) test should prompt an investigation into the underlying causes in order to prevent damage and ideally reverse the process.

Greetings!
Welcome to the October, 2012 issue of NUTRITIOUS BYTES where we ask "Are you allergic to yourself?"
But first...
My thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been impacted by Hurricane Sandy. If I can do anything to help, let me know. I got off relatively easily but I know others who have not.
For the month of November I am offering half-price Bioimpedance analyses. The Bioimpedance analysis is a noninvasive test that measures body fat, muscle mass, body water, cellular health and more. Indicators of biological age are obtained with this test. The usual fee of $50 will be reduced to $25 and all proceeds will be donated to Hurricane Sandy relief through the Red cross. Call my office to schedule your 15 minute assessment: (516) 829-1515. |

Are You Allergic to Yourself?
| An ounce of prevention...
A properly functioning immune system defends you against foreign threats like bacteria and viruses and hunts down and destroys transformed or cancerous cells. If your immune system does not mount a proper response against these threats, infection and cancer are the end result. If your immune system is inappropriately acitve, that is also a problem. When the immune system responds to harmless foreign substances like pollen, allergy results. When your immune system goes on the attack against your own healthy tissue, autoimmune disease is the ultimate result.

There are more than 80 different autoimmune diseases, affecting tens of millions of Americans. Some of the more common conditions are Grave's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, vitiligo, type 1 diabetes, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, Raynaud's disease, and systemic lupus erythematosus.
These conditions produce much pain, suffering, disability and shortened lifespans. An argument can be made for classifying heart disease as an autoimmune disease. If this is true, then autoimmunity is the number one cause of disease in the United States.
Autoimmune diseases are usually treated with powerful immune-suppressing medications that have very bad side effects. Natural alternatives can often help without much in the way of side effects.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is certainly applicable to autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune diseases do not typically develop overnight. One study found that there are indicators in the blood that are present up to ten years before the development of an autoimmune disease. These indicators are antibodies. Antibodies are immune system proteins that target foreign invaders for destruction. In the case of autoimmunity, what is measured are auto-antibodies produced against the body's own tissues, like the thyroid, pancreas, joints or spinal cord. If you happen to have an abnormal blood test for an auto-antibody but you do not have signs and symptoms consistent with a particular autoimmune disease, your doctor will probably do nothing. "Come back and see me when you are really sick and we'll give you a dangerous immune-suppressing drug" is the basic attitude.
I have a different approach to these abnormal auto-antibody results. I recognize that it is trouble brewing and take steps to slow, arrest, and ideally, reverse the process. Is this realistic. From my knowledge and experience, I believe it is.
Conventional medicine seems to give little thought to the cause of autoimmune diseases. The obvious factor is immune system dysfunction. People develop imbalances in different branches of the immune system that does contribute to autoimmunity. Why does this happen? There are many possible contributors, which vary from case to case. It's important to understand that the same disease can have different causative factors in different individuals.
If an individual is not breast-fed, the immature immune system does not receive the necessary factors for healthy development. This can be one early-life influence. Another very common influence is vitamin D insufficiency, which seems to be the rule rather than the exception. There is a relationship between how far people live from the equator and the incidence of multiple sclerosis: the farther from the equator, the greater the risk. Vitamin D insufficiency is the reason; vitamin D status decreases in colder climates as the body is less able to produce vitamin D from the weaker sunlight. Vitamin D helps to keep balance within the immune system and protect against the development of autoimmune diseases.
Another important reason for development of autoimmunity goes beyond the concept of immune system dysfunction. A healthy immune system is able to distinguish harmful threats like bacteria from your own tissues; it attacks the bacteria but leaves you alone. How is the immune system capable of this discernment? There are cell surface proteins on bacteria that your immune system evaluates and identifies as foreign. This leads to activation of an immune response. Your own healthy cells have cell surface proteins that your immune system is programmed to identify as friendly and not a threat. When your immune system comes in contact with your own tissues it leaves them alone.
What would happen if your cell surface protein or other structures became altered somehow? Then they would no longer look like you. They would appear foreign to you immune system and illicit an attack. Your immune system would technically be doing its job in attacking non-self. Does this happen? Yes! There are a number of factors that can structurally damage cell recognition molecules. One important issue is toxicity. Environmental chemicals (including some medications) can initiate the tissue damage that leads to targeting by the immune system.

Mercury from dental fillings initiate autoimmunity
| I recommend everyone have periodic testing for auto-antibodies. The earlier the autoimmune process is identified the more likely a debilitating disease can be prevented. I identify and treat underlying causes and take steps to restore balance to the immune system. This type of personalized, safe and natural approach has "side effects" of unplanned wellness!
