Statewide Education
Youth Summit

Youth and adult allies from Amherst, Boston, Cambridge, Fitchburg, Lawrence, Springfield and Worcester convened in Worcester, MA on January 16th to share knowledge and skills and build youth power for public education in Massachusetts. Over 50 people attended the first Statewide Youth Summit to discuss policing in schools, student rights, and funding.

Students brainstormed about their vision of an ideal school and discussed their desire for change around school policing, school to prison pipeline, increased funding, high stakes testing, charter schools, and more.

The room was electric with bright ideas and curiosity about campaigns from the various cities represented. The young people left inspired and eager to collaborate on statewide initiatives that incorporates the amazing youth organizing projects already in progress.   Concerns about School Policing was a major discussion point for all groups in attendance.

There was clear demand for more opportunities for youth to convene and discuss education issues, both from those in attendance and communities such as Greenfield, Holyoke, New Bedford, and Revere who were unable to attend the summit.

Stay tuned for details about Appleseed's Statewide School Climate Summit where students are invited to attend.  Visit below for more details:
