BSAC is thrilled that today the Boston City Council passed a resolution in favor of divestment. This was a victory for climate and youth justice in Boston and shows our city's commitment to young people and their future. The resolution supports city and state divestment from fossil fuels.
BSAC students and allies organized a hearing on fossil fuel divestment this Monday and drafted the resolution that was ultimately passed 11-1 by City Council. BSAC built support for the legislation by meeting with City Councillors, researching the benefits of divestment, and gathering allies committed to a just and stable future in Boston.
The success of the hearing and the vote is also owed to the dedication of our youth and adult allies from Alternatives for Community and Environment/Roxbury Environmental Empowerment Project, The Better Future Project/350 MA,The Food Project, BYOP, St. Stephen's Church, Alliance for Climate Education and Student-organized Climate Action Network. Councillors Michelle Wu, Matt O'Malley, and Mark Ciommo, co-sponsored the resolution and have been essential partners in this campaign.
