Greetings!
During the month of May we celebrated Older American's Month. This gave us the opportunity to acknowledge the Older Americans in our lives personally and/or professionally. They could be our grandparents, neighbors from our childhoods, or spiritual leaders. Either way, they have contributed to our present lives.
It's only recently that we have brought an awareness to Older Americans that they are "caregivers" not just fulfilling a family responsibility when they step into this extraordinary role for their loved ones or friends. Even though it comes natural, it's still difficult and filled with hardship. What brings it full circle is the fact that as the younger generation, we see a pendulum that sets steadily in the middle of where we respect their desire to be solo caregivers with our push to provide support, information and guidance to make it a little easier, a little less stressful, a little less painful. If we can continue to do this successfully, then we have truly honored Older Americans at a very vulnerable time in their lives; which makes my passion for caregiving a truly worthwhile gift.
As we round the corner into the summer, this month we are turning our attention to honoring professional caregivers. Their unwavering commitment to caregiving for family members is a precious gift that often may simply seem routine. If your loved one is cared for by a professional caregiver, take time this month to personally recognize them. What they do is far more than a job. We have organized The New Age of Caregiving Retreat here in our local Tampa community. On June 15th, we will come together to create a day that will allow local professional caregivers to recharge, reflect and relax. Please share this complimentary event with any professional caregiver that you know that would enjoy a chance to get revitalized.

In Celebration of Older American's Month
My Story
From my childhood memories I have small, but meaningful experiences with Older Americans beginning when I was a fifth grader in school. I vividly remember my mother driving late at night from Miami Beach, FL to Chicago to see my grandfather in a hospital bed before he died. In her self-determined rebellious nature she disregarded the evening hospital 'no children under the age of 16' visitation rule by sneaking my brother and me up the backstairs of the hospital past their curfew.
