"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
- Genesis 2:7
One of the great truths associated with the creation of man was that he was to become a vessel or house of inspiration. According to Genesis chapter two, when God created man he breathed into him the breath of life. Unfortunately for Adam, he opened the door for sin to enter into his life and when he did the very inspiration of God that was breathed into him suddenly expired. Death took hold on the inside of his spirit and he lost the ability to breathe in and out the breath of God, which is what it means when the Bible says, "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned" (Romans 5:12). Adam didn't die physically for nearly 930 years. But something happened in him the moment he lost his connection to the life of God. He lost the ability to function by inspiration. That is what it means to be dead in our sins. We became the product of expiration when the real reason for our existence was to become a house of inspiration.
In order for God to remedy the situation he had to send Jesus Christ into this world to redeem man and restore what he lost in the fall. What we sometimes overlook about the coming of Christ is that the Bible says he was the Word made flesh (John 1:14). John writes to tell us, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). Then down in verse fourteen it says, "And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us..." (John 1:14). Here is what is so powerful. Paul told Timothy, "All scriptures is given by inspiration of God..." (2 Tim. 3:16). In other words, God is saying every word of his is inspired! It is God-breathed! That is what inspiration means. If we know that Jesus was the Word, then don't you know that everything about his life was filled with inspiration!
The moment we became born again by the incorruptible Word of God (1 Pet. 1:23), our spirits were invigorated with the inspiration of God. That's what Elihu prophesied over Job when he said, "There is a spirit in man; and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth understanding" (Job 32:8). The heart of man was designed to be a carrier of inspiration, and when we become alive with the life of God, then everything in us is to be lived out of that inspiration. Inspiration is to become our teacher. John said it this way: "We have an unction from the Holy one, and we know all things" (1 John 2:20). What he is calling the unction is really the voice of inspiration. God speaks to us down in our spirit, and he opens us up to know things by the Spirit that we would not be able to know any other way.
That is why it is so important that we feed on the Word. When we allow God's Word to enter into our heart we are allowing ourselves to become nourished by the inspiration of God. Our life becomes a vehicle of inspiration because we are saturating ourselves in his inspired Word. When you look at the Bible you should see it as more than just stories of people who lived their life many years ago. You should recognize it as God seeding us with illustration after illustration of him working to get us back to what we were originally called to be, and that is to be a vehicle of his breath, his inspiration. You ought to look down at the Word and see it teeming with life waiting to impart the inspiration of God into you so that you can live inspired and to be an inspiration to others.
I can't tell you the times where something rose up inside me where I was quickened to speak a word to someone. Many times while in the pulpit preaching I have stepped over into a greater unction, a greater sense of inspiration to say what I knew the Lord had put on my heart to say. It's moments like these that God intends for every one of us to live as part of our daily routine. It's how Jesus lived his life, and John said, "If you say you abide in him, then you should walk even as he walked" (1 John 2:6). If he walked by inspiration, then we should be walking by inspiration too.*
