Jane Harding receiving a Certificate of
Appreciation from Jo-Ann Ford
|
Dear Fellow Member, When Jane Harding stepped down as President in January, I was relieved and grateful that she agreed to remain on the board so that we could all benefit from her knowledge and continued involvement. I, especially, appreciate being able to turn to her for guidance as I begin to handle the responsibilities that go with this office. Some days I am left wondering how she managed it all, and for so many years. Jane has served on Nutmeg's board continuously since 1988 - and in that time, she's done it all. She's been both secretary and vice president. And she's been President for 12 of her 26 years as a board member. There is no question that Jane is completely dedicated and devoted to this Club. She is equally devoted to the breed, and again, she's done it all. She has been breeding conformation and performance champions for over 3 decades. She is justifiably proud of the many Cutwater dogs who have achieved dual-ring titles, i.e. - the dogs who have won as beautiful representatives in the breed ring but who also have proven themselves as dogs with intelligence and drive in the performance rings. Jane believes it essential that PWDs maintain their working dog heritage. To this end she personally and doggedly teaches, trains and competes in: Conformation, Agility, Water Work, Rally and Obedience. And when she's not doing all this, she is researching and supporting health initiatives for PWDs and offering counsel, insight and advice to PWD-owning strangers from all over the country who seek her out when facing concerns about their dogs. For 26 years Nutmeg PWD Club has benefited from Jane's prodigious efforts and knowledge. While many have contributed to the club's success, Jane's efforts have certainly been part of what has helped make it the preeminent regional PWD Club. Her many accomplishments and achievements are a shining example and inspiration for all of us. I look forward to continue serving with Jane on the board and working with her on numerous Nutmeg-related activities and events for many years to come. Jane - for your generous and on-going gifts of: energy, enthusiasm, guidance, leadership and knowledge: Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Jo-Ann

Report from the Annual Meeting
Nutmeg Annual Meeting - January 2014
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As one of her last actions as President, Jane Harding presented beautiful bouquets of flowers to each of Jane Freeman, Water Committee Chair Extraordinaire, and Cheryl Rutz, our outstanding Treasurer, in recognition of their remarkable contribution and service to our Club over many years.
Luckily for all of us, both Jane Freeman and Cheryl will continue their tremendous contribution and service to Nutmeg.
At the Annual Meeting the following officers and directors were elected:
President Jo-Ann Ford
Vice President Terri Pecora
Secretary Ylisa Kunze
Treasurer Cheryl Rutz
Board Members Jane Harding, Patty Hobin, Mary Knoll, Phil Lauter and Kim Nickerson
Many thanks to Nutmeg's hard working officer and director volunteers for all they do. We'd like to express our appreciation to Patty Hobin for keeping our website up to date and for all of her efforts as editor of previous newsletters. Thanks to Terri Pecora for chairing Nutmeg's Nominating Committee this year.
We are all grateful to Ylisa Kunze for everything she does to organize and run the Annual Meeting, including finding the pleasant and convenient venue in Stamford at which we have held the Annual Meeting in recent years.
Before the business portion of our Annual Meeting, we were treated to a presentation by a veterinarian from Smith Ridge Veterinary Center in South Salem, NY, the largest integrative veterinary practice in the country where conventional and holistic medicine are intelligently combined.
The presentation covered the most current protocols for canine vaccinations and integrative approaches to nutrition and general health.
Vaccinations should be considered a medical procedure and should be given only when pets are healthy. As dog owners and lovers we must educate ourselves and decide what is right for each of us and our pets.
Thanks very much to Melinda Miller for setting up this fascinating lecture and discussion.
The most current vaccine protocols call for fewer vaccines given less often and are based upon the legendary pioneering and on-going research of Dr Ron Shultz.
Here is a link to an informative interview with Dr. Shultz:
The 2014 Calendar - Another Great Success
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We know you are enjoying the action-packed, fun and stunning photos in our beautiful 2014 calendar. Thanks to all who purchased this year's calendar thereby allowing Nutmeg to make a generous and meaningful contribution to the Portuguese Water Dog Foundation to support cancer research.
Many thanks to our Calendar Committee Chair Melinda Miller for another excellent calendar and great year of sales. Thanks so much to Mary Knoll who singlehandedly shipped out this year's calendar.
And, yes it is Time to Submit Your Photos for the 2015 Calendar

Health Clinic - April 6, 2014
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our annual All-Breed Nutmeg Health Clinic was held on Sunday, April 6th at the Norwalk Veterinary Hospital.
We had a nice turnout of PWDs as well as dogs of other breeds. Once again, our thanks go out to Drs. Marjorie Neaderland and Charles Duffy for providing the ophthalmic and X-ray testing and microchipping for our dogs.
The importance of medical testing like this is that not only does it provide us with early warning of possible disease in our own animals, but that it also provides statistical data via CERF and OFA databases for both veterinary researchers and breeders alike. We all benefit from this and we highly recommend attending next year's clinic. Our prices for the offered procedures remain among the lowest available.
Many thanks to Sam Bell and Kathy O'Rourke for another superbly run Health Clinic, expertly assisted by dog wrangler Cheryl Rutz. Big thanks also to super volunteer Mary Anne Carpenter who was at the clinic with her PWD Maya and offered to help sell Club merchandise while everyone else was busy.
Dry Dock Beginners Workshop - April 6, 2014
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Dry Dock Workshop was also held on Sunday, April 6th (scheduling caused an unavoidable conflict with the Health Clinic) under the always skillful tutelage of acclaimed PWD water work experts and participants Jane Freeman and Jane Harding.
Mary Knoll set up and sold Nutmeg merchandise. The Workshop was well attended even though there was a last minute change of location to Tails-U-Win! in Manchester, CT.
The Workshop focused on basic skills that are needed for beginning water training in anticipation of participating in water trials or just having fun in the water with your PWD.
Much wise and sage learning was dispensed to the participating dog/handler teams by the Jane Freeman and Jane Harding water training superteam. The equipment needed to begin water work was discussed.
We hope many who took the Workshop will enroll in Nutmeg water training classes this summer.
Meet The Breeds - September 2013
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last September, Ylisa Kunze once again volunteered to represent our breed at the AKC Meet the Breeds event at the Javits Center in New York City.
Our thanks and sincere appreciation to Ylisa for all of her hard diligent work to organize and set up and later break down our exciting and informative PWD booth. Many thanks also go out to Ylisa and her PWD Bodhi, to Phil Lauter and his PWD Cabo and to all of the other participating volunteers who contributed to making this event so successful.
We anticipate participating again in the AKC Meet the Breeds event tentatively scheduled for September 28 - September 29, 2014 at the Javits Center.
If your PWD loves attention and to be petted and is reliably socialized and well-behaved with people and other dogs, plan on joining in on the fun and volunteer with him or her in September.
Check our website for more information later in the summer as it becomes available.
Ship's Store
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As most of you know, Nutmeg sells a lovely and unique selection of clothing sporting images of our favorite breed doing their thing. The clothing is displayed and sold at the Annual Meeting in January, at our Specialty Show in June and at our Water Trial in August. The opportunity to pick up some of our new attractive and functional PWD-related gear is one more perfect and compelling reason to come join us at one of our events.
The sale of clothing and other PWD-related merchandise allows Nutmeg to continue funding canine disease research and making charitable contributions to worthwhile dog-related organizations and causes. Please keep this in mind the next time you pass our racks or need gear for water work.
Enormous gratitude and thanks go out to Mary Knoll and Jane Harding for running our merchandising operations and keeping us all so beautifully and appropriately dressed. Special thanks to Kim Nickerson for all of her hard work to create the wonderful and original PWD designs that adorn Nutmeg clothing.
This year we have added a few new selections for the warmer weather. Rest assured that, contrary to the appearance of the models in the images, no humans were harmed in the making of these stills.
All of the new selections are lightweight and unlined with many convenient and ample pockets.
 |
For the more colorful individual, please consider this number in periwinkle blue. Trés chicer!
|
 |
This black, longsleeved lightweight microfleece jacket comes with an image on the breast of a PWD pilfering an oar and the resulting criminal pawprint on the sleeve. The item can also be procured in dark fuscia and light royal blue
|

 |
Here is a very lightweight wind jacket in navy. The jacket sports a tuck-away hood, side-seam zippered pockets, a lower back pocket and 2 inner pockets. A leaping PWD graces the jacket and there is a pawprint on the left sleeve.
