If you're in Southern California, be sure to stop by the Abilities Expo! The event takes place from Friday, February 28th through Sunday, March 2nd. Canine Angels will have a booth and will also be doing demonstrations in the main arena. It's a wonderful opportunity to meet Canine Angels staff and board members, graduates, volunteers and dogs. We'll be there to answer questions, help interested families start the application process, and show you what our dogs can do!

We're always looking for volunteers to help at our booth at this event. If you'd like to join us, please contact Kelly at kelly@canine-angels.org

The first CAST Team Training for members of the Class of 2014 was held in November.  Two families participated in this four day session, held at Sheila's house.

Members of the class were Mikayla and her parents, Dan and Dana Smith, who were there to receive a PAL Dog, and Jim Schussler, a high school special Ed teacher, who received a Facility Dog. On Day
 Mikala, Dan, Dana & Travis
One,The class began bright and early with everyone meeting each other, lectures, videos to watch and discussions on dog training.
Day two, the class met a group of the dogs and had lots of hands on training time in addition to more lectures and videos. Day three was spent working and bonding with the new dogs.
 Jim & Dash

Fortunately, the weather was good and the group was able to take the dogs for walks around the property.  On the last day of training, the recipients were presented with their dogs.  We then took everyone outsidewhere a mini agility course was set up and everyone got a chance to work all of the dogs on the jumps and dog walk.

Mikayla received Travis, raised by Cathy and Joey Davalos of Fremont, CA.  Jim received Dash, a female Labradoodle, raised by Dale Balme and Family from Grants Pass, Oregon.
Fido Fun Fest

Fido Fun Fest, Canine Angels' 6th annual dog walk and family fun day, took place in October in Irvine, California. Over 200 people and 60 dogs joined in the fun, which included many contests, food trucks, booths, dog tricks & pet first aid demos, a pumpkin patch, caricature artists, a spectacular disc dog show, and a raffle with hundreds of items for pets and people. This year we introduced an auction that included Disneyland Resort tickets with a 2-night hotel stay and VIP tickets to Dancing with the Stars.

Canine Angels is grateful to all of our event sponsors. A very special thank you to the following donors of financial or in-kind event support: Pacific Photography, Dancing with the Stars, Artemis Defense Institute, The Anabella Hotel, Pet Nutrition Center, The Disneyland Resort, Kohls Cares , Natura Pet Products, Racquelle Vellandi, Kent Rasmussen & Sharon Illions, Amy & Dru Thomas and Family, and Kristi Wysocki.

Thank you to all who attended Fido Fun Fest this year. We look forward to seeing you again this Fall!

Graduate Story

Class of 2011 graduate Sierra, along with her Canine Angel Joe Cool, recently attended science camp in the San Bernadino Mountains of Southern California. Sierra and Joe went everywhere together, learning and exploring it all. Sierra's mom reports that Joe did an amazing job! They even got to go on a night hike in complete darkness. The other campers were very impressed with Joe's calm, cool attitude. Sierra, we are so very happy that you and Joe had a wonderful time at camp. Thank you for sharing your story!

Puppies In Flight

Did you know that US Airways helps assistance dog organizations like Canine Angels transport dogs all around the world, free of charge? One of the many benefits to programs that are members (or candidates like us going through the accreditation process) of Assistance Dogs International is that we have access to the Puppies in Flight Program. This program allows US Airways employee volunteers to become trained to work with assistance dogs and take them on transports and test flights (short turnaround trips). Dogs get to ride in the passenger cabins.

Canine Angels became a member of the Puppies in Flight Program in 2013 and our first puppy transport took place last month when Halo got to fly from California to Arizona. She was an excellent traveler and met many new friends on her journey. Thank you to US Airways, and especially to Don, Halo's volunteer who flew with her!

In Memoriam
Cynthia Hastings Regius was a true fan of Canine Angels. She supported many fundraisers, helped with our recycling program at Gonsalves Elementary School, and taught all of her students there about assistance dogs, acceptance, and helping others to live better lives. Our team always enjoyed making a special trip to her classroom when we were on campus. The Canine Angels family is very saddened to hear of Cynthia's passing, and we will always treasure the support she gave us. We thank those who have donated to CAST in Cynthia's memory.
Introducing Halo
Canine Angels is proud to introduce Halo, our newest puppy-in-training. She is an adorable Golden Retriever who was purchased from Cindy Abels of Power Paws Assistance Dogs. She spent a little time with Canine Angels' So. Cal. staff members and got to meet the Budweiser Clydesdales before the Rose Parade. Then she headed to Arizona to the Sulgers, her puppy raiser family. They are excited to raise her and say she's very sweet and is doing well so far.

Canine Angels sends a tremendous thank you to one of our Advisory Board members, Bill Hetzel, and his family for sponsoring Halo, and to many other very special supporters who helped us to purchase Halo and all the supplies she needed to begin her journey as a Canine Angel!
