A Culture of Giving and Giving Back
in Hillsborough

As the 2013-2014 school year progresses, your generous donations to the Hillsborough Schools Foundation (HSF) continue to support the Hallmarks of a Hillsborough Education which include:
  • Exceptional Teachers;
  • Small Class Sizes;
  • Excellence in Reading and Math;
  • Dedicated Counselors; and
  • World-Class Enrichment.
Over the coming weeks, we will launch the HSF 100% Club membership, which gives a "shout out" to various groups, classes, grade levels, Boards, Tennis Clubs, and Sports Teams who achieve a 100% participation level.  Joining the 100% Club helps us meet our overall community participation goal as well as the dollar goal that will help raise excellence in our schools.  Every contribution matters, and we thank you for your support.

In this issue of HSF Community Newsletter, we have not only highlighted many of the Hallmarks of a Hillsborough Education, but we also could not resist the opportunity to recognize all of the outstanding accomplishments in the area of Citizenship and Community Service that shape Hillsborough's culture of giving.

To learn more about why Hillsborough community members give to the Hillsborough Schools Foundation and what impact their gifts have on our school district, we encourage you to watch the video below, which premiered on "What to Expect Night" at all four of Hillsborough's public schools last fall.

South School:  Making a Difference

By Marci Riley

Community service and outreach have always been a priority at South School.   Every year, students work hard to help others at school and in the community. Under the guidance of South's principal, Elizabeth Veal, and an incredibly involved and service-minded Community Outreach team led by parents Andrea Ballard and Afsoon Turner, South students have numerous opportunities to make a difference at the school and in the world around them.

South families participate in at least four collection drives every year (Click here to read more . . .)

West School:  Raising Caring Citizens

of Good Character

By Sherry Haber

At West School, Citizenship and Character Education are not just buzzwords to be thrown around, but rather the foundation upon which West School's culture is built. Principal Dr. Jamie Adams explains that there are three components that are integrated into the school's core curriculum on a daily basis: The Essential Outcomes, the Habits of Mind, and the 6 Pillars of Character. In fact, the 6 Pillars of Character embellish the walls of West's corridors in beautiful eye-catching mosaics and serve as a daily reminder to students and teachers alike.

Along with mastering core curriculum standards students are taking to heart the following character traits:  (Click here to read more . . . )

Crocker:  Paving the Way

for Lifelong Engagement

Through its Mission Statement and Essential Outcomes, the Hillsborough City School District (HCSD) recognizes that education must not only support academic development, but also help students become "people of good character" who are "invested in making a positive impact on their family, community, and world." At Crocker, there are many programs that help students become caring, contributing members of society by giving them opportunities and encouragement to serve both their school community and their broader community.

One service opportunity at Crocker is Student Council, the school's student government. Guided by advisor Ryan Carroll and comprised of representatives from every grade level, Student Council plans a variety of activities, like (Click here to read more . . .)

Crocker's vibrant band and drama programs are an important part of the World-Class Enrichment that is a Hallmark of a Hillsborough Education.  Under the guidance of Band Director Lester Chun and Drama teacher David Koppel, Crocker students displayed their musical and theatrical talents this winter in December's Winter Band Concert and in two plays presented over a single weekend in January.

The Winter Band Concert featured selections in a variety of musical styles from all four Crocker ensembles: the Concert Band, the Symphonic Band, the Jazz Band, and the Drumline. The Concert Band is the school's introductory instrumental group, although most of its members have studied with Mr. Chun since 4th grade on an opt-in basis. It is comprised of nearly 90 6th and 7th graders and focuses on teaching students to play in a group. The Symphonic Band consists of over 100 students, primarily 7th and 8th graders, who are selected by audition. They learn to perform more complex meters, key signatures, and rhythm patterns than those taught in Concert Band. Concert and Symphonic Band members enroll in band as an elective course.

West School:  Where Math Equals More
Than the Sum of Its Parts

For the lucky parents and community members who attended the January Hillsborough City School District (HCSD) School Board meeting, a special presentation was delivered by the students participating on the West School Mathletics Team, who revealed that Math can equal more than the sum of its parts!  Students enlightened parents and the Board of Trustees as they proved that through Mathletics, they had mastered more than a love of numbers and problem solving, but had gained Essential Outcomes that will serve them well in life.

North School:  Facility Dog Enriches
North Stars Learning Center

There is a new arrival at North School - a specially trained Facility dog named  Rhett!  Alice Bliquez, the teacher for the North Stars Learning Center recently  received the dog from non-profit Canine Companions in Santa Rosa to support her students.  Rhett, a Labrador/Golden Retriever mix, understands 40 commands.  His special training allows Learning Center students to improve communication and motor planning, while providing motivation to learn. Normally, there is a three-year wait list, but Ms. Bliquez's outstanding application and enthusiasm shortened the process to one year.  One of the parents said how much she loves the classroom for her child and is so pleased the school supported Alice Bliquez's application for the dog.

South School:  Learning Center

Gives a Thumbs Up to Sign Language

By Laurel Miranda

In January, the Tiger Learning Center (TLC) at South School had a special classroom visitor via Skype - singer songwriter Rachel Coleman of SigningTime.com!  By teaching American Sign Language (ASL) through music and movement, Rachel helps children of all abilities improve their communication skills.  Using both an iPad and the classroom's Smart Board, Rachel was able to meet each of the children in the TLC over the internet, teach them the signs for "The Rainbow Song," and incorporate the children's suggested pizza toppings into her "Silly Pizza Song."  A big thank you to Rachel Coleman for making time in her busy production schedule for our Tiger Learning Center students!!!

Hallmarks of a Hillsborough Education:
Exceptional Teachers

One of the Hallmarks of a Hillsborough Education that admittedly is harder to quantify than others is the exceptional teaching staff, who work to ensure that each student has the best possible opportunity for success and learning.   Because of the funds that the Hillsborough Schools Foundation (HSF) raises, the Hillsborough City School District is able to attract highly qualified and talented teachers and administrators from far and wide. 57% of HCSD teachers hold advanced degrees and 74% have taught in Hillsborough for 5+ years. Recent HCSD Forward initiatives passed by the Board of Trustees will ensure that the district continues to invest in our teachers by offering professional development as well as collaboration time with their colleagues.

There are so many teachers who go above and beyond the scope of their job, but in this issue, we would like to highlight just two examples of the kind of dedication that Hillsborough teachers exhibit.

Crocker:  Mr. Carroll's Teachable Moments

By Sherry Haber

November 19, 2014 marked the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.   Crocker Social Studies teacher, Ryan Carroll, not only felt that it was important to expose students to this powerful speech, but to leave a lasting impression on his students. That day he dressed up as Abraham Lincoln and recited from memory the entire Gettysburg Address on HTV. Shortly after that, 8th graders studying U.S. History followed his lead and recited the Declaration of Independence also on HTV. It is this kind of inspired teaching experience that separates Hillsborough Schools from the rest.

When I walked into my son's second grade classroom during conference week, I was immediately struck by the amount of art on display. It seemed to be hanging from every possible surface, even from wires strung to create additional surfaces.

I regularly receive emails seeking assistance with the Parent Group- sponsored Art in Action, so I am aware the students are being taught those art lessons. I did not know, however, that art is an integral part of myriad lessons taught during the year. My son's teacher, Carol Gutierrez, told me that "art finds its way into every subject area (Click here to read more . . . )

Returns Home after College

Class of 2004

From training at 6:00 a.m. for the cross-country team to winning third place in the annual Fly-Offs competition to seeing the movie Gladiator for the first time in Mr. Kittredge's history class, l have many fond memories from the years I spent at Crocker Middle School. Crocker instilled many great values that I have carried with me throughout the years, and the exceptional teachers at Crocker sparked my thirst for knowledge, culture, and art - passions that continue to enrich and guide my life today.

HSF Rocks THE GRAMMYS*

By Sherry Haber

The countdown has begun for Hillsborough's biggest night in music when the Hillsborough Schools Foundation (HSF) presents HSF Rocks the Grammys. The red carpet will be rolled out at the annual Dinner Dance and Live Auction on Saturday, March 8th at the San Mateo Event Center. Partygoers and paparazzi alike will dine and dance the night away to live music, bid on fabulous Auction items, support the Fund-A-Need spotlight, try their luck at a glitzy Raffle, and rock with the most GLAMOROUS musical guests -- all to benefit Hillsborough's public schools.

Dinner Dance Co-Chairs a.k.a. "the Grammy Girls" (Jane Donahue, Alli Murdoff, Kelly Scandalios, Jen Schaffer, Kim Gelman Turner, and Kim Williams) have been hard at work with their Dinner Dance Committee to make it a night to remember!  Attendees are encouraged to dress as their favorite band, rockstar, groupie or in their finest red carpet glam!

The evening will begin with Gram-alicious Cocktails and an incredible Wine and Swag Bag Auction to set the tone. Raffle tickets are already available for purchase: $100 each; only 250 tickets will be sold!   The lucky winner will receive a $5,000 Steiners Jewelry gift certificate with champagne shopping experience. Call the HSF raffle hotline at 344-6685 to purchase a ticket.

Fund-A-Need this year will support "One To World - Technology in the Classroom!" Fund-A-Need bids will go directly to purchase one-to-one devices for Crocker Middle School students and fully loaded portable laptop carts for the elementary schools.   This will keep students on the cutting edge of technology and ensure that students and teachers alike are prepared for instruction and testing of the Common Core Curriculum, to be introduced this year and officially launched in the 2014-2015 school year. The goal is to raise a minimum of $50K this year through Fund-A-Need to support this HCSD Forward initiative that will help students become Effective Users of Information, Media, and Technology.

Kicking off the GRAMMY festivities is the Online Auction starting February 20th through March 3rd. Auction Chair Kellie Custino and her team have put together some Smash Hits: Pay-to-Play parties, faculty-sponsored events, sports outings and memorabilia, student-run activities, one-of-a-kind experiences and many more exciting offerings.  Bid high, and bid often to support HSF!

Dinner Dance Tickets are now on sale for $225.

Invitations were sent out in early February, or we invite you to order online. http://www.hsf.org/dinnerdance.html

Together we are all ROCKSTARS!
