LIGHT UP THE WORLD
July Update
|
Greetings!
It has been an eventful quarter for LUTW! Project planning and implementation took place for off-grid solar projects in four countries, our Annual General Meeting was held in June, and we presented at the Global Student Leaders Summit in Costa Rica in April. If you missed our Annual Meeting, you can find a copy of our 2012 Annual Report here. We also hired a new Technical Project Manager based in Peru, Jacob Foundation. Jacob replaced Rod MacIntosh, who worked with LUTW the previous 3 years. We would like to extend our gratitude to Rod for all his hard work and wish him the best in his new job.
The quarter ended on an interesting and challenging note as our headquarters were left without electricity for 10 days due to flooding in Southern Alberta. For us it was a only a matter of inconvenience and our thoughts go out to those significantly affected by floodwaters - not only in Alberta, but in other locations such as the state of Uttarakhand, India. We are grateful to be part of such a generous and supportive community, thank you to all of you who reached out to others during this time!
Read below and click on images for highlights of some of the projects we completed over the past months. For those of you that have always been interested in participating in projects firsthand, see below for more information on an upcoming opportunity to volunteer with us on a project in Peru this November.
Thanks again for your support!

PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Monitoring and Evaluation Visit
In late May into early June, Sally and Tim Goddard visited some of the solar systems installed in health clinics in Papua New Guinea as part of the Light Up Papua New Guinea project implemented in honour of Nichola Goddard. They visited a number of aid posts on the very remote Trobriand Islands. While there, one volunteer travelled with locals from the island to visit past installations ensure systems were working properly and when necessary, address technical challenges. LUTW and local partner, ATprojects, are planning for a new phase to the project that will launch shortly.

NUEVA YORK PROJECT
Renewable Energy Project in Peru
In May, LUTW implemented a project in Nueva York in northern Peru to supply power to an Education Centre. The Education Centre was inaugurated in October 2011, but did not have a sufficient power supply for the facility to operate full-time. LUTW designed and installed a 1.1KW solar system on the facility with the technical support of SkyFire Energy volunteer, Tim Schulhauser. LUTW trained 10 people in the community and three representatives from a local partner, FECONABAT, in solar energy principles and photovoltaic systems.
Nueva York is the third largest community in the District of Nauta with a population of about 800 people. Approximately 300 students will use the educational resources which includes computers, internet, printers, a television, microscopes, robotic kits, and laptops.
