LIGHT UP THE WORLD
January Update
Greetings!

Happy New Year!

We hope you enjoy the following update on project highlights from the last quarter of 2012: including a project in the highlands of Peru and a project bringing light to a homeless shelter in Texas. Read about newly announced plans to bring solar power to an Education Center in the Peruvian Amazon - a project that is 81% funded. Help us raise the remaining $8,400 to power computers, the internet, and lights for 300 students. If you're interested in sustainability, read the case study about LUTW published by the Canadian Council for International Cooperation.

Wishing you all the best in 2013!

LIGHT UP CCEULLACCONCHA
+ HUAMANRAZU
31 Solar Home Systems Installed

With the generous support of CIP and private donors, LUTW was able to complete this off-grid renewable energy project in late 2012. The communities of Cceullacconcha and Huamanrazu are located in the district of Santa Barbara, a 1.5 hour drive from the capital of Huancavelica. At an altitude of 4500 meters above sea level, not many agricultural crops
can be grown. Most community members are ranchers of alpaca, llamas and sheep.

Five local technicians were trained on the principles of electricity, solar energy and solar PV systems. The trainees completed technical workshops, practical exercises, and worked with LUTW and partner San Javier to install 31 solar systems in homes and a fish farm. Each family received a 20W solar panel to power 4 LED lights, charge cell phones and power a small radio. The new systems enable families to save money and replace disposable batteries previously used in flashlights to light their homes. This project is expected to divert 2,000 batteries away from pasture land each year.

ISTANBUL PRINCIPLES
LUTW Featured in CCIC Case Studies

The Canadian Council for International Cooperation published 24 case studies profiling innovative practices among Canada's development and humanitarian sector and related each to one of the eight Istanbul Principles for Civil Society Organization effectiveness.

UPCOMING PROJECT
Nueva York Renewable Energy Project: Peru

LUTW has confirmed a new project in the community of Nueva York that will bring solar power to an Education Centre to power 15 computers. The Education Centre was inaugurated in October 2011, but unfortunately it does not have a sufficient power supply for the facility to operate full-time. This means students in the area have been unable to fully take advantage of the resources at the centre. At least six people in the community will be trained on how to install and maintain the system, with a total 780 people living in the community benefiting from the project.

This Project is 81% funded, but we need $8,400 to complete this project and bring sustainable power to the Education Centre. Help us get there by donating now to the Nueva York Renewable Energy Project!

In October, Texas Tech University and the World Energy Project of Rawls College of Business invited LUTW Peru staff to help train and install solar home systems for the homeless of Lubbock, Texas, USA.

Tent City is a location donated by the City of Lubbock where social services are provided to the homeless who are sheltered in military surplus tents.

A team of 50 volunteers helped with the installations after going through a brief training. Fifteen systems were installed to provide light to 30 tents that will be used by the homeless population in Lubbock.

Thank you volunteers!

Thank you to LUTW volunteers Mark Macdonald and Michelle Cote who generously fundraised for projects in Peru in lieu of gifts.
