Grand Knight's Report

Brother Knights,

The "Snake Saturday Parade" couldn't have asked for better weather. A big thank you to all those who helped to prepare and deliver this year's parade entry. The crowd was large this year as verified by the fact that we handed out about 3,000 tootsie rolls. Nice job to all.

We have completed our 3rd fish fry at St. Charles with proceeds benefiting five charity groups. The help and assistance with the Thursday preparation and Friday fish fry has been wonderful. We are completing our prep work in about 2 ½ hours which is a significant improvement over last year's event. Last week we were cleaned up and out of the kitchen last Friday night by 11:00 pm. Your help made this all possible. Come and join us, we have three more fish fries and if you have suggestions to improve our event, please talk to any of our knights.

Our facilities continue on with the installation or our security system. In the photo below of the entry of the Hall, you will see a security keypad, alarm horn and motion detector. The system isn't active yet, but soon will be. If you haven't been through a training session or received your activation/deactivation information card, please contact Dan Bacon.

Our Corporate Communion celebration is coming up of the 30th at St. Gabriel. Please adjust you plans and mass schedule and join us with your family

Our 4th Degree Exemplification is 5th April at the Airport Hilton. We are in need of assistance in transporting snacks and drinks for the Hospitality room Saturday morning. If you can help, please let me know. Please feel free to stop by throughout the day and greet our new candidates. The next meeting of our Assembly will be held in Smithville and will be a welcome to our new 4th degree members. We will have a modified meeting schedule as this will be a "pot luck" dinner in their behalf.

We are continuing to seek individuals to fill some open positions. If you have time and a passion for helping others, or need additional information, please contact any of the officers.

A few dates/events to remember:

* Pitch Game - Thursdays at 1:00 pm at the Hall

* Toy Makers - Tuesdays at 8:00 am at the Hall's Hobby Shop

* Bingo - Fridays

* Corporate Communion - 30th Mar 8:00 am at St. Gabriel

General Meeting of Council #3414 - Apr 1st (Tue) 7:00PM (at the Hall). The prayer of the rosary will begin at 6:45 pm.

If you have any questions at all or would like further information, please see me. I can also be reached via email at gusbannick@yahoo.com.

Thank you,

We welcome John St Clair jr to the ranks of our council.  John was exemplified by the First Degree on March 4th and on March 23 he participated in the 2nd and 3rd Degree ceremonies.

We are hopeful that some of the newly initiated Catholics from the parishes will decided to join us.  We will have a 1st Degree in May.

Our last Friday at Fantasyland will be April 25th.  We will be investing money and time in our new home but it was felt that the move will be profitable for us and more importantly for the charities we support in the long haul.  The name of the building may be changing but most everyone knows it by "The Gold Buffet".  Starting May 2nd that is where we will be and it will be a huge improvement from the past facility.

We have had a definite upsurge in players in the last 3-4 weeks and if this continues as we hope then we will need more workers.  Please consider giving us one night every month or if not that then every other month.  We will need you to make a difference.

We Stand Strong On Ethical Ground

Some people believe that ethics in business is a contradiction in terms. They think that in order to be profitable, a company and its leaders must abandon morality and embrace the dark, greedy side that they see so often in the news and in movies..

At the Knights of Columbus, we know this isn't true. A business can be both ethical and successful. We are.

As a Catholic organization, we understand the value and importance of our core beliefs and the original mission of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. In fact, much of the strength and financial security we provide to members and their families can be attributed to our ethical, moral standards.

More than 96 percent of Knights who buy our life insurance keep it, year in and year out. The Order takes this commitment to our members very seriously. This means carefully planning when it comes time to invest. Our professional staff researches all transactions to insure that they fall in line with Catholic values. If a transaction makes them uncomfortable, they don't make it.

"We exclude any company engaged in activity that conflicts with Catholic moral teaching: companies directly involved in abortion, contraception, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, for-profit health care that pays for any of these, or pornography," said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. "There are many companies in the pharmaceutical and communications industries that would undoubtedly provide excellent returns for us, but which are not in our portfolio because they engage in research and development or programming in ways that violate the sanctity or dignity of human life."

In the end, the Knights of Columbus investment strategy is motivated by morality, not money. Yet, each year we remain profitable, increase our assets and stay dedicated to this vision that will keep the Order financially sound for generations to come.

"Faithful Catholics have choices when buying life insurance," said the Supreme Knight. "But they know that at the Knights of Columbus their policy is supplied by an insurer that shares their moral and ethical values and is guided in all of its investment and sales practices by those values."

We have an ad-hoc committee on hall security which has met in order to hash out the response plan for our new security system.  The members of that committee are Ernie Anson, Dan Bacon, Gus Bannick, Chuck Chamberlin, Tim Laird and Fred O'halloran.

We are shooting for the following time line.
  • Easter Sunday:  The system is to be armed when we leave but there will not be central monitoring.
  • Memorial Weekend Friday - Central monitoring will begin.

If you have a key and have not received instructions on the system please get with one of the committee members before Easter.   They will give you a "yellow card"  which contains instructions on a wallet size card.

A word from the Ladies

Spring is here and hopefully we will soon have warm weather. I am sure everyone would rather see irises and tulips instead of snowflakes.  With the thought of Spring, I want to send a reminder for the Children's Easter Party and Egg Hunt on April 13th.  The time is 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The children will be able to make crafts, play a game, eat treats and hunt eggs with the Easter Bunny.  The ages for the party are infant to age twelve.  Please RSVP to me by April 11th with the your name, the child's gender and age to my email at sheila_vank@yahoo.com or call at 734-2382.  We need the information so we can purchase your child a gift and for the number of eggs we need to fill.  We hope to have a great day and hope you can attend.

I need and Easter Bunny.  Please let me know if you may be interested in helping me out.  This would be an easy way for a teen to earn some service time for school or for Confirmation class.

We would like to thank the Knights and their wives for attending our Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner. It was wonderful visiting with everyone.  We made over $600.00 for our charities.  Also, many thanks to Pat Smith for chairing the dinner and everyone for their help in the kitchen and with set up and clean up.

We still have cookbooks for sell, price is $15.00 each.  Contact Kathy Gaston if you would like to purchase one.

Until next month,

Sheila Van Keirsbilck

Auxiliary President
