Brother Knights

This month we celebrated our annual memorial mass for both Tri-County and our 4th degree assembly. A couple of photos taken at the assembly mass are shown below. Thank you for taking the time to support these important events

The Toymakers of 3414 have a few weeks of toy making left before the product is boxed and distributed for Christmas. The toys will be displayed for our Dec general meeting. There are about 350 toys.

There has been some work to improve the work flow in the shop. A table saw has been moved to the garage. Rather than place the equipment on craigslist we would like to make it available to our members. If you have an interest, please contact John Hiatt hihohn3@juno.com.

A special committee has been meeting to improve our bingo activities. A recommendation was made and supported to implement a rewards program which you will be hearing and reading about in the weeks ahead. A logo has been created by our Deputy Grand Knight, Jerry Nolte.

SCHOOL FAMILIES APPROACH

Our Membership Recruitment efforts have less than satisfactory this year so far.  We may want to emulate council 7199 in Parkville.  They have a very large school which did not have very many fathers of school children in the Knights.  With the approval of the pastor and the school principal the Knights composed a letter which was sent home to each school family inviting each Catholic father to consider joining their council.  I believe they plan on personally contacting each father with an offer to get more information to them.

The campaign just started but early results are promising.  We will be watching this closely and perhaps this could be something we implement.

We are scheduled for a first Degree in January but at this time there are no candidates.

A 2nd and 3rd Degree has been scheduled for March 23rd at Smithville Council.  Please put it on your calendar now.

SCHOLARSHIPS / GRANTS

It isn't too early to think about applying for a scholarship from the Missouri State Council. Completed applications using only the 2014-2015 application form, and required certification forms, must be postmarked no later than FEBRUARY 15, 2014 in order to be considered.

Bingo Report
Bingo Chair Email
The council approved the plan to institute a rewards card system for our bingo players.  The plan is for the Bingo Bucks cards
to become active February 7th.  Sign ups will begin in January.

By now you should have received an email asking you to allow us to put you name into the list of Bingo Bucks patrons.   We thank those you are allowing us to do so.  We also want to thank those who have volunteered to enter the player data into our online site of patrons.

You should soon see regular articles in your parish bulletins informing parishioners about us and the good works we do.

The members of the ad-hoc marketing committee are feeling very positive about the efforts to increase our council and bingo visibiility.  We are confident that our attendance numbers will grow at bingo and we will attract new members to our council.

K of C ANNUITY INFORMATION

I was looking at the Kansas City Star business section a few days ago and they had a listing of interest rates for CD's.  It showed the average for 5 year CDS was 1/2 %.  Too many members think there is no safe option.

If you have an existing annuity with us you are guaranteed a 3% rate.  If you don't have an existing annuity we can still get you 2.4% guaranteed for 4 quarters. There are surrender charges if you take the money out early but they max out at 5% and there are many ways to withdraw funds and not pay any surrender charges. When interest rates begin to increase the K of C has historically raised their rates too. The table below shows results for five years if rates remain stagnant.  So far Janet Yellon is talking about keeping rates low until 2017.
YearCDNewExisting
0.5%2.4%3.0%
1 $  10,050 $  10,240 $  10,300
2 $  10,100 $  10,486 $  10,609
3 $  10,151 $  10,737 $  10,927
4 $  10,202 $  10,995 $  11,255
5 $  10,253 $  11,259 $  11,593
Caution: It is important that you fully understand how your annuity plan works and it is my job to explain it to you. Be careful if someone offers you returns much higher than these. Remember the phrase "return" does not mean the same thing as "interest" and both are different from "yield".

If you have money sitting in a CD don't you owe it to yourself to investigate a Knights of Columbus annuity?

A word from the Ladies

The cold weather has arrived and the holiday season has begun.  We had a great day for the Children's Halloween party.  The kids had fun trick or treating at the haunted village and making crafts.  A special thanks to Tom Maschler  for driving the kids around the grounds in the Knights' wagon. Also, a big thanks to everyone for their help in making this day  a success.  It was suggested that we might want to invite kids from our local Catholic churches as a way of promoting the Knights, to show we are family oriented.  Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

The Children's Christmas party is December 8th at 2:00 p.m., at the hall.  We ask for reservations, so we can get your child a gift.  We need the child's age and sex.  Children from 0 - 12 are invited.  Reservations are due by December 6th.  Please call, Sheila Van Keirsbilck at 734-2382 or email me at sheila_vank@yahoo.com

The Adult Christmas party is December 10th at the hall.  The evening begins with Happy Hour at 5:30 p.m. and Dinner at 6:30 p.m. The Knights provide the meat and everyone is asked to bring a dish to serve 12 or more to share.  Please RSVP to Sheila Van Keirsbilck by December 6th, so the meat can be ordered.  We are also collecting new clothes, diapers, and supplies for Rachael House.  Your donation will be greatly appreciated.

We hope you mark your calendars and plan to attend the parties.  We always have a lot of fun!

Be safe and God Bless,

Sheila Van Keirsbilck
