Dear Friends:

Did you know that TTF has an incredible staff? We make it look as if there are a lot more of us than there actually are! Please take a moment to get to know us here and call us with your ideas and questions.
TTF Staff 2013
Our first Annual Fund Drive was a solid success -- but as you know, we must raise funds year round to support our critical environmental work. We are recognizing our donors again in this newsletter. Please consider joining this group of citizen leaders who know that their dollars make a difference for TTF! Your contribution is just a click away.

We're so excited about our new Watershed Heroes program. Read on to learn about this program and let us know if you -- or someone you know -- would like to be in our first class!

And don't forget, we're hosting our second Community Service Networking Breakfast this month. This is a special opportunity to learn about how your students and clients can participate in rewarding watershed work. We're delighted to present this event in collaboration with the Awbury Arboretum Association! See you then.

Best,
Julie

BECOME A WATERSHED HERO!

TTF is developing an exciting new program to encourage

Mussels

stewardship and engagement in our watershed community. It will engage, educate, and recognize people of all ages and backgrounds who are interested in learning about protecting their watershed.

Watershed heroes will participate in:

  • Hands-on service learning projects
  • Tours of restoration and stormwater management projects
  • Visits to partner facilities, including the city's sewage and water treatment plants

This program will provide a valuable connection among our volunteers and projects. Our Watershed Heroes will be a team of people who care about and understand watershed issues, are able to inform their neighbors, and are ready and able to volunteer for projects and advocate for their streams, creeks, and communities.

Would you like to be in our first Watershed Heroes class? Email alix@ttfwatershed.org to sign up.

TACONY CREEK PARK ON MLK DAY
MLK Day Volunteer
MLK Day volunteer picking up creekside litter.

TTF is proud to have participated in the 18th Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service with a clean up of Tacony Creek Park (TCP) behind Friends Hospital. Over 60 volunteers came from across the region, representing One BrickASPIRA, Community Academy in Juniata and Abington Junior High School.

Thank you volunteers for coming out on such a cold day to devote your time and energy to our goal of improving our watershed! We also appreciate the help of volunteer organizers, Philadelphia Water Department (PWD), Friends Hospital and TTF Board President Gerry Kaufman.

FEATURED TTF BOARD MEMBER: BRYAN HAVIR
Bryan Havir Kudos to Bryan T. Havir, P.P., AICP, who has recently been appointed Cheltenham Township Manager, after having served as Assistant Manager for the last 14 years. Since 2005, Bryan has represented Cheltenham Township on the TTF board, serving as Treasurer.

With over twenty-five years combined municipal and county government and land use planning experience, Bryan is responsive to community needs, particularly in the preservation of environmental assets.

Bryan is currently overseeing the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) Tookany Creek Feasibility Flood Study. The study encompasses the entire Tookany Creek Watershed, including sites beyond Cheltenham Township boundaries, to seek potentially significant flood-mitigation projects.
ROCK CREEK GREENWAY CONCEPT REVIEW
Creek
Temple University has been working with Cheltenham Township to develop designs for a Rock Creek Greenway. On February 13, Temple Master of Landscape Architecture students will present their final design concepts to the Parks and Recreation Committee for review. Event information here

Cheltenham Township hopes to restore, beautify and connect the community to Rock Creek Park. The proposed Rock Creek Park Greenway focuses on reducing the effects of storm flooding, while restoring native plant communities along the creek and preserving natural resources. Proposed plans include a 6' tall dam, raising of the creek by two feet, restoring three different habitat types -- upland forest, floodplain forest and wetland forest.

This is a great step in restoring our creek and watershed. Thank you, Temple University! TTF looks forward to helping to make these visions a reality.
WHEN IT RAINS IT POURS! RAIN BARRELS ACROSS THE WATERSHED

Here are two very cool rain barrel opportunities from across the TTF watershed.

From Philadelphia!

Rain Barrel

The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD), Mural Arts Program and Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center have teamed up with students from Laura W. Waring School and YESPhilly to beautify stormwater management! Students have created original works of art to adorn PWD big blue rain barrels, employing the same technology used on colorful Big Belly trash compactor-recycle bins and recycling trucks.

Vote For Your Favorite Rain Barrel Design by February 13 here. PWD needs your help to choose the top three works of art that will brighten select neighborhood corners, stoops and other community landscapes in Philadelphia!

From Abington!

The Abington EAC's "Rain Barrel the Town" project offers rain barrels for $35 each, with customized barrels in 28 colors for an additional $10. Your purchase support Township parks. For more information, visit the Abington EAC

TTF MAKES A SPLASH IN JENKINTOWN

This new column is a place for us to feature kind words from our watershed partners about our efforts. Here's a letter from Jenkintown resident Alyson Lester, AL Engineering & Design, LLC:

Jenkintown Town Square
Jenkintown Borough Manager Carolyn Hanel thanks volunteers for their work.

On behalf of the Jenkintown School District,

thank you for your support of our Growing Greener Grant application.

It's hard to know where to begin in thanking you for your efforts. You have been an invaluable ally -- I never dreamed that it would have been possible to leverage the support of the Philadelphia Water Department in such a limited time-frame.

It has been such a pleasure getting to know you better through this process. I hope for many more opportunities to work with you again in the future.

TTF completed marking all of Jenkintown's storm drains this past summer through a number of volunteer days including the one shown in this photo. Thank you, Alyson and the Jenkintown School District for your commitment to stormwater best management practices! We look forward to working with you as well as Jenkintown Borough on efforts to protect our watershed!

Rain Check is a pilot program started by PWD to help local residents pay for landscape improvements that manage stormwater runoff. Through this program, PWD will pay for most of the cost of installing Green Tools that reduce the amount of rainwater entering the sewer system during storms. It's an opportunity for residents to participate in greening the City and to install landscape improvements at a fraction of typical costs. The deadline to respond to schedule a property assessment is February 15.
