Calling All Pet Owners: Incidence of Heartworm Disease on the Rise in Virginia
The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) has released its map of predicted heartworm prevalence for this year, and Virginia pets are at high risk. The organization bases their predictions on National Weather Service data, weather trends, parasite prevalence, and statistics from veterinary clinics and animal shelters across the country. The key indicators that point to increased numbers of heartworms are anticipated above-normal temperatures and precipitation amounts, because mosquitoes thrive in wet, warm climates. While there are medications available to treat heartworm disease, they are costly, and the treatment does present some risk to the patient. Prevention is the best defense against heartworms, which also can rarely affect humans. For more information, visit Old Dominion Animal Health Center's website.
