From the Pastor

Dear Covenant Family,

As of July 1, I will no longer be the pastor of Covenant Community Church.

As I write that sentence, I'm filled with emotion. Powerful emotions. Mixed emotions.

I'm excited about my new appointment to Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville, NC

But I'm also grieving as I prepare to leave one of the most wonderful churches I've ever served.

I'm happy to be moving back to the Piedmont Triad area (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point) where my parents, Lorie's mother, my sister and her family, and our daughter Mary all live.

But I'm also sad to be leaving these beautiful mountains where I've spent many hours drinking in the wonder of God's creation.

About a month ago we sent out a letter informing everyone of this change. The letter explains the reasons why I'm moving at this time and gives some information about our United Methodist appointment system. If you happened to miss it, you can read it here.

My last Sunday to preach at Covenant will be June 1. My first Sunday to preach at Main Street will be July 13. In between I'll be spending a week at the Davidson Clergy Center getting myself renewed, refreshed, and re-tooled. I'll also be attending the annual meeting of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.

And in between those two things, I'll be using vacation time to pack and move and try to sell my house.

I am extremely grateful to the people of Covenant for being so positive and supportive once this move was announced. One more example of what a wonderful church you are.

If you should have a pastoral care need during the month of June, call the church office and they will put you in touch with Dottie Gibbsour Pastor of Congregational Care. Dottie and her husband Lewis are retired United Methodist pastors who have honored us by making Covenant Community their church home. And for the last several years, Dottie has served as our Pastor of Congregational Care on a volunteer basis. I am eternally grateful to her for providing this service to the people of Covenant.

I'm really excited about what's going to happen at Covenant after my last Sunday! (In fact, I'm really sorry I'm going to miss it!) We've planned a sermon series called, What's Our DNA? Each week a different speaker from Covenant Community will lift up one of the unique features of this church that makes us who we are. You'll get a better feel for what God is up to here. And most of all-you'll see that the church is not the pastor.

Covenant Community, you are a great church. My eight years as your pastor have been some of the best years of my life. It has been an honor to walk alongside you as we have followed Jesus together.

I love you!

Pastor Claude

Dear Covenant
Note from our current Director of Children's Ministry, Kelly McDill

Dear Covenant,

We announced on Sunday, May 25 that my family and I feel that God is calling me to spend more time with them, especially on weekends. Therefore, I will be looking for a full time Monday through Friday job soon. I will be leaving Covenant this month. My last Sunday will be June 8 and my last working day will be June 20.

I just want to thank each of you for support over the past six years. You have grown the Children's Ministry through your dedication to Jesus and to the children, and through your support of our programs.  I am truly blessed to know each of you! I appreciate the love I have received over the years and the support you are giving me now as I step down to spend more time with my family.

I wish you all the best and know that you will continue to support Covenant through your prayers for the children and in your service with them.

Love,

Kelly

Summer Study on the Holy Spirit - Thursdays @ 6:30-7:30pm

Do you know the Holy Spirit?  He knows you.  If you believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit dwells within you.  While we hear much preaching about God and his Son, we hear little about the Holy Spirit.  Yet Jesus says it is better for him to die and leave his disciples, so that he can send the Holy Spirit to them after he ascends to heaven.

Larry Bopp will facilitate this in-depth 12 week summer study on the workbook "Experiencing the Holy Spirit, Transformed by His Presence" by Larry Keefauver. The study is broken up into four parts:

  • Part 1:  Meet the Holy Spirit
  • Part 2:  Experience the Spirit's Presence
  • Part 3:  Be Empowered by the Spirit
  • Part 4:  Walk in the Spirit

The study will begin Thursday, July 3 in Room 208 at 6:30 - 7:30pm. The workbooks will be provided at the cost of $14 each.

Prayerfully consider enrolling in this study. It may be a life changing experience for you. If you would like more information about this study, please contact Larry Bopp, 828-450-2617.

Letter in Regards to our April Haywood Street Congregation Community Outreach Project

Dear Covenant,

Thank you and all from Covenant Community Church who came out to work and fellowship with us last week. What an amazing turnout of folks pouring themselves out for this ministry - including some who had never been here before. We are grateful for your service, for new relationships, and for the ongoing support we receive from Covenant.

In His Love,

Thank You Covenant
Letter in Regards to our April Haywood Street Congregation Community Outreach Project

To our Family at Covenant Community Church,

Thank you for your gift to Haywood Street Respite. The gifts we have received from your congregation go far beyond monetary gifts. The toiletries drive, the meals, the work, and mostly the time, these are all valued and needed.

Thank you for your commitment to us!

Jody

Haywood Street Congregation

Thank You Covenant

Joe and Joan Lippa have been our faithful point people for our ABCCM collections.

Dear Faithful Parishioners,

What a delight it has been to be part of the outreach to ABCCM these past 7-8 years in terms of taking clothing and shoes to ABCCM Crisis Center Clothing Room from church. I will continue to volunteer in the clothing room, but will no longer be the contact person for Covenant. Gratefully, Wendy Lee has offered to do that.

I would like to thank all who have contributed and to those individuals in particular who responded so immediately when I requested. Please continue to give!

Again and again, I will say what a great joy it is for me to give to those who need so desperately, to see their smile, and to hear their heartfelt words of appreciation! It is a very special kind of joy, when I hear over and over: "Thank you, Jesus", "Praise God", "What a blessing!"

Thank you from my heart, Covenant people!
Joan Lippa

Community Outreach Collections

www.cccasheville.org/outreach

We want to make a difference in this lost and hurting world, so we believe we should start with the neighbors God has placed around us. Locally, we serve through projects in and collections for our community that minister to human need. Three organizations we partner with to supply items are ABCCM, Food for Fairview, and The Haywood Street Congregation. Items for any of these ministries can be dropped off in the lobby.

ABCCM

ABCCM's serves those that are homeless and others in need in our community. Crisis Ministry: needs canned meats, grits, and jelly. Clothing Closet: needs men's shirts, pants, underwear, shoes, and diapers size 4, 5, & 6. All items can be dropped off in the lobby. Questions? Contact Wendy Lee.

Food for Fairview
Food for Fairview is a local "Client's Choice" food pantry (in which families receive individual attention from volunteers in selecting food and hygiene products) serving Fairview, N.C. and the surrounding community. We collect non-perishable food items, diaper, paper products, and hygiene items. Questions? Contact Jack Adair.

Haywood Street Congregation
Hospitality is at the heart of all the ministries of the Haywood Street Congregation, including the Clothing Closet. Drop off men's shoes, sneakers, underwear, jeans, socks, t-shirts, light jackets in the lobby. Additionally, the prayer ministry at Haywood needs large print Bible's, pocket size Bible's, Inspirational devotionals, reading glasses and/or small magnifying line readersQuestions? Homeward Bound Service Opportunity

Covenant is working with Homeward Bound to help eliminate homelessness in our city.  Homeward Bound needs people who are able to help pick-up and deliver furniture donations.  The work is easy, and only involves a few hours. Contact Tom Baldwin (828-713-0151) if you are interested or need more information.

Service Opportunity at AC Reynolds
Dear Covenant,

I'm Beth Love, and I'm a teacher next door at A.C. Reynolds High.  First of all, I'd like to reiterate my thanks to Covenant Community for hosting our Student Food Drive event back in February.  It was a wonderful night that brought our community together and raised $1,300 to feed WNC!

Exams are looming on the horizon and we need proctors to observe and help maintain secure testing environments. Testing will run from Friday, June 6 - Thursday June 12.  Proctors will be needed for either a morning session (apx. 7:40 - 11:00) or afternoon session (apx. 11:30 - 3:00).  Training is provided. Please contact me if you can help.

I thank you in advance for considering this service to the school.

Children's Ministry
Virtue and Verse of the Month

Each month we focus on a different virtue during small groups on Sunday.  There are supplemental activities in the children's weekly newsletter for you (parents) to use to reinforce what we (the kids) learn on Sundays. Please help your child to learn the Bible verse for the month and have them recite it to a member of the Greeting Team.  We have incentive prizes for the children who learn it but more importantly we are teaching them to hide HIS word in their heart.

We use First Look (preschool) and 252 Basics (elementary) curriculum. Learn more at www.whatisorange.com.

90 Day Tithe Challenge

www.cccasheville.org/challenge

"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it." (Malachi 3:10).

Did you see that? In this one area-the tithe-God actually invites us to test him! And that's what this 90-Day Challenge is about. The word tithe means "tenth." Tithing is the Biblical practice of returning the first tenth - 10 percent - of your income to God. You do this as a sign that everything you have comes from God, and belongs to God.

If you have not been tithing before now, then why not give this challenge a try? Visit www.cccasheville.org/challenge to sign up and/or see how it works.
