Tip of the Week for July 29, 2013
It is closing in on that time again, time to go back to school! Your children may not be happy about it, but there are ways that we can support the back to school transition so it is more comfortable for our kids with (or without) autism.
One thing we can do now to facilitate a smooth transition back to school is to begin preparing our child for what is coming. One method to do this is to use pictures of the school, the teacher, friends, the playground, the cafeteria, etc. to make a book that goes through the child's day at school. It can be as low tech as printing out the photos and writing the text on them, to making an ebook in PowerPoint on the computer. Either way, begin reviewing the book with the child daily in order to prepare them for going back to school. An even better idea would be to have them help make the book. Preparing ahead of the transition helps to calm some of the anxiety that may come from the drastic change in routine that occurs when kids go back to school.
