Tip of the Week for June 17th, 2013

  Asperger's and Employment- Part 3

When supporting individuals with AS to find and maintain summer employment, it is important to consider the sensory needs of the individual as well as the physical environment and accompanying sensory factors of the place of employment.

Many individuals with AS:

  • Have limited range of tolerance for particular noises, smells textures, physical touch, etc. (sensory avoiding).
  • Have a strong need/preference for particular smells textures, physical touch, etc. (sensory seeking).
  • Have an inability to tolerate or go without certain stimuli; this can result in isolation and withdrawal from the environmental stressors.

It is important that we help individuals with AS consider their sensory needs when choosing appropriate summer employment.  In addition, if there are sensory annoyances in a prospective workplace, we must teach individuals to self-advocate to help shape their environments to fit their needs.
