Tip of the Week for February 11th, 2013
Early Indicators of Autism - Part 2
Early detection and quality early intervention services are the number one indicator of future success for individuals with ASD. In order to begin services at the earliest possible age, we need to know what to look for that may be signs of ASD. This week we will continue to focus on those early indicators.
The Center for Disease Control lists the following indicators as examples of social issues related to ASD:
- Does not respond to name by age 12 months
- Avoids eye-contact
- Plays alone
- Does not share interests with others
- Only interacts to achieve a desired goal
- Has flat or inappropriate facial expressions
- Does not understand personal space boundaries
- Avoids or resists physical contact
- Is not comforted by others during distress
- Has trouble understanding other people's feelings or talking about own feelings
