Tip of the Week for October 8th, 2012
Asperger's and Driving
Teaching your teenager with Asperger's syndrome to drive? Before your teen takes the wheel--from the safety of the passenger seat--have them practice making smart guesses about the intentions of other drivers on the road. The act of driving requires us all to make constant inferences regarding others' intentions and then to make driving decisions based on our predictions of others' actions! This is, at times, difficult for neurotypical folks, but can be nearly impossible for teenagers with AS (or PDD-NOS, or High-functioning autism, etc.), who often lack the ability to take others' perspectives. After one of these driving outings, work with your teenager to "draw" or "map out" different driving scenarios and illustrate the thinking (using "thought bubbles") of drivers, in addition to existing DMV laws.
Book of the Week: Health Help from the Alaska Library Network (ALN)! ALN is a group of libraries who have gotten together to bring all Alaskans some useful web-based resources. Teen Health & Wellness is a new resource that is worth a look for any teenager. It includes information on autism spectrum disorders, and personal narratives by teens.
