Concerns about Siblings - Part 3

In the book "Sibshops: Workshops for Siblings of Children with Special Needs", Meyer & Vadasy describe several concerns that may be seen with siblings of children with disabilities.  The first concern was overidentification, the second concern was embarrassment, and the third concern is guilt.  Meyer & Vadasy state, "Relationships between brothers and sisters and their siblings who have special health or developmental needs resemble those of typically developing siblings in most ways.  Siblings of individuals with special needs, however, are far more likely to experience the darker end of the emotional palette, nevertheless it comes in many hues.  Brothers and sisters may feel that they caused their siblings' disability; they may experience survivor's guilt; they may feel guilty about their own abilities or they may harbor less-than-charitable feelings about their siblings."  (pg. 13)
