Tip of the Week for April 30th, 2012
This Week's Tip: Sharing the News - Part 1 In the book, "The Autism Checklist," Paula Kluth gives strategies for parents to use when sharing the news of an autism diagnosis with friends and families. She says, "Help others learn. Uncle John might want to see research on autism, and Grandpa might want to read stories about families who have children on the spectrum. Older siblings may want to surf the Web to learn more. Remember that everyone learns differently, so be prepared to provide a range of resources and materials." (pg. 44)
Kluth, P. (2009). The Autism Checklist: A Practical Reference for Parents and Teachers. San Franscisco, CA: Jossey-Bass. Book of the Week: Understanding Autism: From Basic Neuroscience to Treatment/ edited by Steven O. Moldin, John L.R. Rubenstein. CRC/Taylor & Frances, 2006. For someone who would like to do research, this book covers many topics. Integrating basic and clinical neuroscience perspectives, this book presents a comprehensive perspective on state-of-the-art research in epidemiology, genetics, and clinical neuroscience and neural systems implicated in autism. This book seeks to stimulate new directions for autism research on etiology, pathophysiology, and the development of new drug treatment. An underlying theme focuses on the potential for future research given the availability of the human, mouse, and other genomes. The text also explores the role of autism in society, including health economics and advocacy issues of interest to legislators. This book is in the SESA Library in Anchorage only; you may search the library catalog via the SESA website or contact Anne directly by email at afreitag@sesa.org, or by phone at 907-334-1301. |
