Tip of the Week for April 2nd, 2012

This Week's Tip:

This week's tip is about endeavoring to infuse more social thinking skills and "mind-reading skills" in natural contexts throughout the school day (i.e. at lunch time or during tutorial class).  Students with HFA and AS need to be taught concrete steps (i.e. "Here's what you do when you when ordering food at a restaurant and here's what you don't do/say"). They may also need to be taught subtler skills to learn how to read social cues and try and interpret others' implied meanings.  There are many ways to help students begin to develop these Theory of Mind (ToM) skills.

Book of the Week:

Mindblindness : An Essay on Autism and Theory of Mind/ Simon Baron-Cohen. This book covers mindblindness and mind reading in relation to social communication. This book is in the SESA Library in Anchorage only; you may search the library catalog via the SESA website or contact Anne directly by email at afreitag@sesa.org, or by phone at 907-334-1301. Here is an article that addresses theory of mind, in part, in a different context: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/18/opinion/sunday/the-neuroscience-of-your-brain-on-fiction.html?_r=1&src=me&ref=general
